Marriage equality will happen with or without Obama on board
Edited on Fri Jun-24-11 04:55 PM by ruggerson
It's a movement that began before he was even involved in politics. The modern LGBT movement began long before he was even born, if you date it back to the Mattachine Society. If he chooses to be a footnote in history as far as LGBT marriage equality is concerned, that's a political choice he has made. It's his legacy and he can define it as he sees fit.

Luckily for LGBT Americans, in the grand scheme of things, his refusal to get on board the equality train even at this late date, while it would be welcome, has little bearing on the eventual outcome.

3. I grew up block from the Stonewall Inn
In fact, my catholic elementary school was down the street from it. My Aunt was gay, came out and raised my cousin with her partner back in the 50s. I grew up on Christopher Street and had gay couples all around me. I watched as a child the elderly man in the apartment across the hall from me die of a broken heart when his partner's family wouldn't let him see his love in the hospital, at the funeral, etc. I suffered as a child in a horrible, violence laden straight home.

Cliches don't work. Separate but equal doesn't either. No religion in the United States of America has the right to force their religious views on everyone.

The time is NOW. It's up to YOU, New York. If you cannot do this, NOBODY CAN.

5. Amen to THAt!!
If Xtians want to know why we are so down on their crap, it is because some of them seem to think that it is just fine to force their moral outlook on the rest of us. I am so tired of them, to tell the truth. I am tired of all this nonsense in New York. The damn Xtians have their precious protections. But that isn't enough. They want to make sure we cannot marry legally, no matter how many concessions are made. It's about time to draw a line in the sand and say, "NO MORE CONCESSIONS. You have the COnstitution to make sure your churches can discriminate against us. If that isn't enough then move to a theocracy."

7. As I wrote to Cardinal Dolan,

regarding his remarks that America will become just like China or North Korea if Gay Marriages passes, "No, Cardinal, America will become like Iran, with an Ayatollah, if Gay Marriage DOESN'T pass.

I learned VERY, VERY well in Catholic School how to argue against THEM. Be careful what you wish for.

6. in 2004 the nation was 40-60 in favor of marriage equality
in 7 years that has flipped to 60-40. Every year minors become old enough to vote... none of these politicians seem to be too forward thinking on this issue.

9. He will come on board. It will just be at an even later date.
He has to evolve first, you see.

10. He "might" come on board. Even if he does stick a little toe on the deck...
...it will still be claimed as a major triumph on a list somewhere.

11. There is some reason to hope that the delinquent evolvers, like our President, will get the lead out
When we start getting it done without them, as with overturning DADT through judicial review, they can suddenly discover the ability to start walking their talk. For, while a politician always needs to have things to promise delivery on in the future in order to keep constituencies returning with support, he also needs to take credit before the constituency solves its problems without him and the opportunity to take credit is lost forever.

They must sense the window for taking credit is starting to close.
