White House says DADT repeal likely this fall
The Senate is likely to pass a bill containing a plan for repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell” after the mid-term elections, according to two White House figures who spoke at separate events this week.

Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina told an audience at his alma mater in Montana that he believed a bipartisan vote in favor of the repeal measure is likely this fall.

Meanwhile, at a book signing in Baltimore last night, David Plouffe said Republicans scuttled a vote on the legislation this week because they believed it could depress their voter turnout this fall. Plouffe, who helmed President Obama’s 2008 campaign, also said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told a group of Republican senators, “We’ll do it in December,” according to a report in the Washington Blade.

Obama, in his State of the Union speech in January, pledged to work with Congress to end the military ban, “this year.”

2. I'm very hopeful
I think we're very close to the end of the ridiculous DADT. I was a HS kid when it passed and I knew it was wrong at the time. It just didn't fit in with the values of freedom we claim to cherish as a nation. It was morally wrong and outright discriminatory, though it was considered a major improvement over the old policy. I am hopeful that this will get done!

6. Color me not buying it...besides, this legislation isn't a repeal, it's a repeal IF
a ton of caveats.

7. I think the deal Biden was talking about had to do with Republicans who agreed to vote for the
repeal of DADT when the study is done in December.

People were saying the Administration should just blow up that deal because whoever it was with didn't vote for the repeal this week. I think the deal was to vote for it in December. Harry Reid held the vote outside of the deal the WH made with some Republicans.

I think we want to win the vote in December even if it sucks right now.

9. Wait a f..king minute!
We are expected to lose seats in the upcoming election. We could not pass it with 59 seats, what is going to change when we have less than that?

I can only think that repubs who were not reelected will vote for it.

14. The link in the OP was talking about voting in December.
That would be in the lame duck session. Those that are elected in November won't take office until January. So even if we lose some of the seats in our Senate caucus (and I think we will), we will still have 59 seats through January -- barring an unexpected death or resignation.

As for the OP, yeah, I'll believe it when I see it.

The mind reels at what they're cooking up to put in place of DADT, if they do indeed repeal it.

There will certainly be concessions to the military report. But I wonder what they'll be.

Any ideas?

13. All that this means
is that Obama does not want to force the issue through himself. If we need an EO to force it through, that is what he needs to do!

21. And what will happen to the thousands of active duty servicemembers
who come out in the meantime? Everyone will suddenly be forced to have amnesia?

Once the genie is out of the bottle, even the lamest Republican CIC couldn't do much about it.

20. Put me on the record here: it will be repealed before before the new congress is seated.
DADT is in its final death throws complete with the last death rattle.

Our GBLT community deserves all the credit for pushing, for fighting all these many years.

It could happen right after the mid-terms, it might happen before the final report is sent to Obama, but it will happen at the latest after the report is made and before a new Congress is seated.

Take some heart. This cruel policy is coming to an end.
