Prop. 8 Overturned: Hey Obama! Read the Ruling!
http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/08/prop_8_ruling_patrick_connors.php

"Today, Judge Vaughn walker drove a stake into the heart of Prop 8. And then he pounded the stake with a sledge hammer. And then he jumped up and down on it.

<snip>

"There are more summaries and analysis of this decision than anyone can reasonably take in right now. The Courage Campaign's Prop 8 Trial Tracker is a good read. Dr. Jillian T Weiss from Bilerico is also a reliable smarty pants source of information. You can, of course, read the analysis and excerpts of Walker's ruling done right here on SF Weekly. Olson and Boies suggest very simply that everyone should read the decision itself. Ted Olson emphasized that Walker's decision "...will be taught in law schools. Millions will read his opinion and be influenced." Consequently, attitudes toward marriage equality will change."

<snip>

"Let's hope so, Mr. Olson. One person with an attitude that could use some changing is celebrating his 49th birthday today -- President Obama. The White House issued a statement about the decision that couldn't have possibly been more terse: "The President has spoken out in opposition to Proposition 8 because it is divisive and discriminatory. He will continue to promote equality for LGBT Americans."

"That is so profound.

Liza Minelli issued a statement that was practically orgasmic in comparison to the one issued by our fierce advocate. She called the deicison "wonderful news." Would it kill you to be happy for us, Mr. President? Even our enemies have more passion."

<snip>

"Mr. Obama, you may be hiding behind a willowy veneer of politicized rhetoric by having your people issue a bland statement of support. That doesn't make you a fierce advocate to anyone but yourself and your obedient followers. You should read this decision, Mr. President, and then tell us why it is that you think it is acceptable to allow any state to strip same-sex couples of their right to equal protection and due process.

Are you still too busy trying to find a way to sound like an advocate without actually having to be one?"

Patrick Connors is an uppity fag and he is tired of waiting for someone in power to tell the bigots to shut the hell up and go away.

I want to know one thing. Is there something Obama could do alone that would be better than having a majority? Could he actually do anything anyway?

Otherwise, I hope this ruling might inspire. It's a good day for the GLBT community, and DU is celebrating.

Congrats for a win for all of us on equal rights for all. :toast:

2. It's a great win for civil rights...
...and comes on the heels of another civil rights victory (even though it's preliminary) in Arizona.

How sweet to have something truly important to celebrate! :toast:

3. Can't speak for anyone else
but I want him to use the bully pulpit and be a powerful advocate for our fight. Be courageous! Explain to America the reason equality is of paramount importance. Give an entire speech devoted to it. Go into a baptist church in the South and make a vigorous call for marriage equality. There is so much this talented man could do.

I agree about keeping our majorities, but when Ted Olsen nearly stirs me to tears every time he talks and I get absolutely nothing from our President, there is something very wrong.

I too think this is an historic day and I celebrate it with you.

5. Has he ever supported anything more than civil unions? I didn't think that he was actually supportiv
of gay marriage (once again taking the "Centrist" position).
