Michigan Rep. Paul Scott: no driver's license change for transgender people

Michigan State Rep. Paul Scott has some unusual priorities in his recently announced campaign for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State. The Michigan Messenger reports that one of Scott’s top four priorities if elected is to “ensure transgender individuals will not be allowed to change the sex on their driver’s license in any circumstance.”

Scott claims that such a move would prevent men dressed as women from using women’s restrooms. Current law in Michigan, according to the Messenger, allows for a person’s sex to be legally changed after transition, including on all documents.

The bathroom argument is standard procedure for those who wish to deny transgender people our rights. Most states allow for some kind of gender marker change on a driver’s license and other legal paperwork for people who have transitioned, and there is no evidence whatsoever that this has led to men using women’s restrooms. Scott is addressing a problem that doesn’t exist.

Some cities and states, including Colorado, where I live, have public accommodations laws that cover gender identity. The bathroom argument was used here when the state legislature was considering this law, but the argument was disregarded, and in the nearly two years that Colorado’s public accommodations law has been in effect, there have been no problems. It is simply a non-issue.

1. That's one of his top four priorities?
Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the USA and he's worried about transgendered people? Sometimes one just has to wonder where these people come from.

10. In fact, I'd qualify ANYTHING having to do with driver's licenses...
As being way the fuck down the list from making sure people can eat, buy clothes, and heat their homes. But then, I don't have the perverted interest in other people's sex lives that the Republicans do.

7. Nucking Futs
Where to even start. Post SRS shouldn't even be a question, switch the damn marker. How many thousands live in stealth due to the prejudice already, and this twit wants them to out themselves every time they need to take a leak. And just what is someone post Vaginoplasty supposed to do to the women in the ladies room anyway? Does he really think some guy would do such just to try and get a glimpse?

Agree, havn't seen any reports that public accomodation laws caused any of the supposed problems. Although legality and safety of entering a womens room while being made as TG are not the same. It's why gender neutral/family restrooms are so important.

11. What, is there a sudden epidemic of restroom problems?
Ever notice how Republicans are often associated with restrooms?

Talk about issues!

I recommend Scott seek professional help.

12. Republicans
There was a ballot measure in a county in Maryland to ban that. Thankfully the ballot was defeated but I heard there were some serious moral scare tactics used. Issues are not important to people who are obsessed with other persons private lives.

14. More than just the ladies room
How often do you have to pull out your licence. Writing/cashing a check, making a withdrawel from the bank. The bouncer at a local club, airport screeners, prospective employers, mortgage originators etc. Does ones history have to be paraded out front and center for everyone to see? And do we want to force someone who has lived as their internal gender since youth to enter their birth sex restroom? Or potentially face prosecution for being in the wrong one in certain states?

There are thousands of transgenders who live in "Stealth". Undetected as transgenders by those around them they live in what many transgenders hope for. Truly integrated as their identified gender. Do we really want this to be brought out every time someone has to look at their ID?

15. Asshole. Great, now I can't look for a job in Michigan either.
If and when my partner is read as male, I'm not going to live in a state that forces him to hand over a card reading FEMALE every time he wants to buy a six pack. Then again, Texas is his birth state, so he may not be permitted to change the necessary documents anywhere.

Thanks for fighting to add another glitch to my life, you asshole scumbag politician.
