2. She seems like a great person
I'm not in Houston proper, so I haven't been paying really close attention, since I couldn't vote for her anyway. I was just reading a local blog about how she out-organized her opponents. I *like* organization....!

3. I'm nowhere near Houston. I'm in the Greater Los Angeles area.
I am so impressed. She was organized, presented the facts in a clear manner and the people of Houston were wise enough to put any bigotry they may have aside and vote in their own economic self interest. Way to go! :applause: If the rest of the country would follow suit, the whole place would be better! :bounce:

4. I lived in Houston for almost 6 years, enjoyed it, and I wish it well with its new mayor.
:)

5. I can't believe this country is still making a big deal of her being a lesbian.
Who gives a flying fuck? For Gods sake this country is such a goddamn joke. Pardon my language, but I'm already fuming over the healthcare "reform" were getting bent over a barrel for.

Bah. More beer.

7. I look forward to the day when it is no longer a big deal.
The day when a person can be elected to public office and no one cares about their ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, personal religious beliefs, or any other such factors that are irrelevant to how well a person can serve his/her constituents as a public servant in a secular government. The day when voters only care about who is the best person for the job and nothing else.

Unfortunately, I think that day will be a long time in coming, if it ever comes. Until then, we must celebrate our victories whenever they happen.

For me, there would have been nothing sweeter than to have heard a collective "meh" at the election of a lesbian as Mayor of our nation's fourth largest city, because I personally believe that her sexual orientation is of absolutely no consequence to her ability to do the job to which she was elected. But in this case, the person who was quite possibly the most qualified candidate for office won, despite the homophobic campaign of fear that was waged against her by her opponent.

That makes her election a big deal, at least in the current state of our country (and our world).

It may please you to know that that *was* basically the reaction in *Houston* - to her sexual orientation, at least, other than from those jerk friends of Locke. :-)

9. That is good to hear.
I'm glad the fact that Houston now has a lesbian Mayor was met with collective indifference locally. Times are changing, slowly but surely. :-)
