The Dem message now: I got mine screw you.
Why should straights care about gay rights?

Why should white people care about racial discrmination?

Why should white collar workers care about unions and blue collar workers?

Why should men care about reproductive rights?

Why should thinking people care about teens being taught abstinence, preferentially - even if it is not effective?

Why should rich care about the poor?

Why should those with health insurance care about those don't have it?

Why should the educated care about those that aren’t?

Why should those with jobs care about the jobless?

Why should those with homes care about the homeless?

The heart of the Democratic party was, that the very people that didn't have a need cared about those that did have a need, and vice versa.

That's what I see ending.

I got mine you got yours, adios.

Everyone benefitted from that broad coalition of unlike people.

The repugs already have a coalition of "like" people.

Everyone is in it for themselves now. That coalition of peple who were culturally left wing on reproductive rights, stem cell research, meaningful sex education for teens and not preferential emphasis on the right wing's abstinence idea, unions and workers rights...adios.

"I got mine, that's as far as my politics goes." :sarcasm:

1. You're right.
This is how a republic dies. Instead of realizing that we are all connected, and that in each sacrificing a little for the benefit of our fellows we raise each other, we all go after our own interests and ignore the suffering of our neighbor. In doing so, we forget that the fire burning down our neighbor's house can jump across the fence and burn our own. That when someone is assaulted in our view without our doing anything to stop it, we have given consent to the act through our inaction, and in turn, given consent for someone to do the same to us, and justified others ignoring our own pain.

When a state is atomized into a mere collection of individuals, it descends into anarchy, in which only the most amoral, cruel and vicious prosper.

9. Well said: each sacrificing a little for the benefit of our fellows
That ethos is gone.

Apathy about the plight of others and ever more demands to shore up only self interest.

We are acting like the party that lost - even as the nation moves to the left, we move to the right?????

143. Yet in so many cases, sacrifice isn't even called for.
It's one of the greatest points of disgust I have for humanity; mindless, unnecessary selfishness.

Growing up, we had two televisions in the house. One television got all the channels, the other got only three even though the picture quality was nearly the same. I remember wanting to watch a show that didn't come in on the limited set. My sister was watching a show on the set with all the channels that both televisions received. I asked to watch my show, but she refused.

Why?

The most she would have to do was take ten steps to the other room, and we could both watch what we wanted to. Suffice it to say, it turned into an epic fight and neither of us wound up watching anything.

Typical sibling stuff.

But this? It's ridiculous. The level of 'inconvenience' anyone would have to suffer is negligible compared to the suffering being caused.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

59. "monitoring"
a terrific word to describe it. :-) I think too many people mistakenly believe that voting is the be all and end all to taking care of things. In my book, every politician - no matter what party they belong to, has to earn the right to be in office. And then, they have to earn the right to remain there.

Yes, I know, I'm a pain in the butt kind of lesbian about politics. LOL But it's the little things that matter most to me.....like a politician doing their job --- to the best of their abilities. And there is nothing wrong with speaking up if you don't like or agree with what you see happening.

update my ignore list to include many of my fellow GLBT community for the glassy eyed Obama worship during the primaries. Most gay people wanted Obama back then. The rest of us were called racists and hated. Back then, I was, apparently, a bitter old racist white woman. Now, I'm a bitter, middle aged, mixed race woman who still hates black people, according to them, anyhow. Fucking lovely. Either way, I'm a racist and bitter. :eyes:

During the primaries I supported Kucinich, then Biden, then Hillary, then Obama, so I was both on and against almost everybody's team at one time or another. (I ignored Edwards and his supporters - one decision I turned out not to regret). The Kucinich and Biden supporters were always kind and polite to everybody, even when we abandoned their candidates.

The Hillary and Obama camps were about equal in rudeness and obnoxiousness. Nothing to choose between the two camps - both had jerks among their supporters. The only difference was that as the primaries wore on there were fewer and fewer Hillary supporters and more and more newbie trolls pretending to be Hillary supporters. They really were racist and I'm sure that they were paid by the RNC to post here.

63. You're considered a racist because you wanted
Hillary. Well then, the political-correctness police would have a great time with me. Because if I had my way, Bugs Bunny would be our next President. He's smart, fast, and at least entertaining. I'm not sure what race he would be - perhaps fluffy.

The color of Obama's skin or his race means nothing to me. Now if a smart, competent female candidate had become President....the 1st time in our entire history, then I might perk up a little about it. I would even get excited if Obama had chosen, and made history - a female running mate. No, the repugs earned that distinction, except Palin doesn't count, she's a alien who should have stayed on her planet. What someone does as our President, not to mention as our military leader, is the most important thing to me.

72. My cat would be a good president.
I thought about this a lot during the primaries. He's elderly but he's still spry and a good leaper. He would improve the tone of the White House after the past eight years. He likes fresh seafood, cantaloupe, and rice pudding. That's a healthy diet that would be a much better example to the country than fried pork rinds.

My cat is a tea-totaller, but he doesn't mind if you indulge as long as you don't get loud, obnoxious, or forget his mealtimes.

He would never, ever start a preemptive war. He's interested only in securing his own borders and ensuring that everyone within them has plenty to eat, a sunny place to sleep, and catnip. My cat would decriminalize marijuana because he understands.

Your cat should run for the Presidency and Bugs and can be his running mate. Btw, Bugs is actually a lesbian bunny...but Disney couldn't handle it. So no one's suppose to know this. :-)

And there's also Louis Black's suggestion: that we should elect a dead President...Reagan would even do. If nothing else, it would scare the pants off of our foreign enemies!! LOL But I think I like the idea of your cat and Bugs teaming up a lot better.

for correcting me. I had forgotten about Ms. Ferraro's close race with Mondale against Reagan. With a little searching I found there have been other female VP nominees, however not within the 2 major parties. Some of the other nominees include: Ms. Peggy Terry, for the Peace and Freedom Party, going back to 1968 and Ms. Nancy Ross, for the New Alliance Party, in 1984, etc.

I'm glad to see this. And all the more reason that I wish Obama had chosen a female running mate -- because the ground had already been broken.

I know that from firsthand experience.

Nah, just kidding. I used to have a pet gerbil when I was a kid. If he had a pocket anywhere, he would have loaded it with guns and ammo. He was SOMETHING ELSE. We put a soup can in there like the books all recommended and he picked the entire thing up and scraped it across the bars of his cage. We tried getting him a mate and he body slammed her. I mean he picked her up over his head and threw her down and across the cage. We let him be a solitary bachelor after that.

Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 12:00 AM by Jamastiene
He was an absolute angel with me, but when my aunt tried to pet him, he took a CHUNK, and I mean a CHUNK!1!11(eleven)! out of her finger. They eventually made up. He was the smartest little critter I ever knew. He was leash trained and loved to chase the dogs all over the house when I put him in his exercise ball.

The night he died, my aunt and I both gave him mouth to mouth resuscitation. We tried everything we could to save him, but he died. He was 6 years old and had gotten something that seemed like a cold. Back then, we didn't have a vet who would treat gerbils. His name was Sir Emmett Emerson the 3rd. There was no 1st or 2nd. I just liked the idea of naming something "the 3rd."

Here is a picture of him:

5. That's part of it, definitely. Must not say anything negative about Dear Leader.
Some of these posts remind me of Free Republic defending the chimp. What part of "democracy" do these people not get? Citizens are supposed to keep an eye on their elected leaders. We are supposed to criticize and push for initiatives, not just sit back applauding everything.

But I think that the problem runs deeper than that. The whole country has been on a free-market capitalism binge for decades and we're seeing the result. "Family values" that involve killing and destroying the lives of whole groups of people have taken the place of ral decency. There seems to be no sense of shared community or responsibility to help others.

The worst babble about the Bible but don't seem to have read anything Jesus ever said.

7. " Shared sense of community" great phrase and it's missing
With this election, I expected--foolishly-- people to turn around, look down and say, "Can we help you brothers and sisters rise up too?"

I always suspected politics was about individual gain, I had hoped that real progressives were more idealistic and moral. Yes, there are some, I see they are fighting here and honest and true.

But the leadership of the party these days? Not so much.

And far too many comments here are just the same shit I read when debating with repug conservatives.

Pretty soon, I expect some to co-opt the term "PC" in the customary derogatory right wing manner and start calling gay rights activism "PC police." :eyes:

Instead, some here act as if it's a big f*cking deal that Kaine might actually allow a segment of it's citizens full legal rights to "CONTRACT" yes, enter into a contract.

Not marriage, not CU's, contracts, like health care durable power of attorney, or POA's.

LiV, you know all about that having lived through it.

Falwell is laughing in hell now at us, isn't he? :grr:

13. That law is why I moved to NJ after Haruka and I became serious
And, what people are missing is this: GAYS CAN'T EVEN "CONTRACT" NOW UNDER EXISTING LAW. I wish people could understand that. As of right now,Gays have NO LEGAL RIGHT: they can't buy a house together jointly, be one another's POA, etc. Sure, you can get the papers written up, but they mean nothing.

That law also helped Webb win, because so many who were outraged by it came out and voted against it. That left-0leaning voting bloc tipped the scales very slightly so that Webb could win.

But oh, Kaine is pro gay rights and pro choice. I know that has to eb true, 'cause I read it here. Doesn't matter that I was in VA for the Kaine campaign, watched all his debates, etc.

15. This is such an important point about INJUSTICE and apathy
toward civil rights. It is glaring and should be condemned by everyone who claims to be a progressive.

It deserves a post of it's own. (hint, hint);-)

17. I know, it's a commitment. heh. But- that story is so outrageous
I remember hearing about it on the news and that is exactly how it was described as taking away any contractual rights between two people who were of the same sex.

I had to wonder, how would that affect a childless little old lady who just happened to want to leave her estate to a kindly neighbor, for example. It just seemed to go way beyond sexual orientation and trample at the heart of a key democratic institution, the ability to make legal contracts.

11. Kaine is only mildly "interested in discussing measures"
Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 01:09 PM by bluedawg12
>>"She added that he is interested in discussing measures “to make sure people can still be able to contract with each other.”<<

As an attorney and as a Dem, he should be spearheading a move to repeal such unjust laws.

14. Keep an eye out for anther rw fundy code word: "narcissism" code for gays.
I first heard that douche Alan Keyes use it in reference to gays.

It is also found on an internet site I will not link to:

"Homosexual activists are very typically characterized by extreme narcissism."
- Evangelical Resources on Homosexuality

I won't bother to link to this hate filled trash, but simply note that it has creeped into DU.

"melodrama" check*.

"narcissism* check*

The list grows, of pejorative code words about gays.

18. Yeah, I've noticed, bluedawg
how right wing the Dems seem to have become. Screw women and screw LGBT'ers. The Democratic Party used to be a decent alternative to the right-wing fundie bullshit of the Repugs. Now we have people telling us that we are melodramatic or narcissistic for wanting full civil rights. It isn't enough to post this right-wing crap in the GD or GDP forums--they have to come here and post as well. i am sick to death of people who should know better thinking and saying that our issues are marginal if they count at all,

Word to all you JERKS out there: our rights are NOT marginal or expendible and we are NOT going to STFU and go to the back of the bus. We're here, we're queer, get over it.

19. Embracing right wing ideology is dangerous
all of societies ills are not cured yet.

Underneath homophobia and sexism, lies racism.

The majority in America were heading gradually toward the left and starting to e fair to "the other" - our party leaders are steering us to the right.

I hope when the day comes that those social ills rear their ugly head, that people are still around on the left to give a damn.

they dehumanize us and give permission to bigots to attack our civil rights and given a chance, our persons.

20. that is great
Edited on Mon Jan-05-09 03:16 PM by Two Americas
Great work these days, bluedawg12. Thank you.

Let's look at this a little more.

Why should straights care about gay rights?

Why should white people care about racial discrimination?

Why should white collar workers care about unions and blue collar workers?

Why should men care about reproductive rights?

Why should thinking people care about teens being taught abstinence, preferentially - even if it is not effective?

Why should rich care about the poor?

Why should those with health insurance care about those don't have it?

Why should the educated care about those that aren’t?

Why should those with jobs care about the jobless?

Why should those with homes care about the homeless?

Straight, rich, white, male, professional, educated, with homes and access to health care. The superior ones, the winners, the new aristocracy - better than the aristocracy the Republicans represent! - we are told.

The conservatives among us here want us to believe that this defines who "we" are. They themselves are from the upper 10% income bracket, are educated professionals, overwhelmingly straight and white, or at the very least promoting this view of who we are if only by their stubborn refusal to look at this or challenge it.

They claim to be "liberal" or "progressive," because they "support" programs to help more people, a few, become like them or be accepted and tolerated among them in the winners circle - as nearly as people are able to become more like them. A few tokens are held up as an example that proves how liberal and progressive they are. A few perfunctory expressions of "support" are to be seen as proof that they are "good" on "these issues."

They will help people - under certain conditions and with many qualifications - to get education, make money, be able to buy health insurance (or they might force them to,) help women compete with men without challenging the male-dominated culture, to get with the program - so long as the program itself is never questioned. If you question the program itself, then you are accused of "going too far" or of "hurting your cause" and "alienating your supporters."

Those suffering and abused and persecuted and left out are seen as though there were something wrong with them. The homeless need treatment - they must be mentally ill or lazy or something, and "we" will "help" them. The unemployed need re-training or education to fix them - they need to start bootstrapping and get with the program. But if they promote organized Labor, well then they are going too far. This whole attitude, this whole approach, is entirely consistent with the "cure the gay" mentality.

This is all about the haves and the have-nots. Those who have privilege, who have protections and security, who have rights, who have status, who have access to resources and power, and those who do not.

The consistent theme from both political parties is that it is the fault of the have-nots - that the have-nots are doing or being something that is causing their own misery. The have-nots need to get out of the way and be quiet - they are causing trouble for the haves. The right wingers say right out that gays are wholly responsible for their own misery - are defective and need fixing. The liberals say that it is OK to be gay, but the way gays are going about things is wrong, so they need to back off and be quiet. Those two approaches work hand in glove to perpetuate and promote the bigotry.

The conservatives believe that the have-nots need discipline and punishment, the liberals believe that the have-nots should be treated nicely - with kindness and sympathy. That is exactly parallel to how they look at their house pets, and house pets are what the have-nots are treated as. Both think that the pets need to change, so that they are not such a nuisance.

It is being looked at as less than human, as though people were pets, that is the problem, not whether or not the pets are being treated with kindness.

People do not want help to become more like the straight, rich, white, male, professional, educated people in order to be "winners" and be accepted. People want to be accepted and respected exactly as they are, and they have the right to that and that is what we must fight for, and nothing less.

All I can add is the observation, that those in the "old" coalition, who think they have arrived and can now leave the rest of us behind are sorely mistaking.

The reason the Democratic party had a coalition of minorities in the first place, was mutual protection from the majority.

If some are deluded into thinking that Obama means that all straight people can be allied against gays or women's reproductive rights and there will be no racial barriers, for example, they are incorrect and they do know it.

Look at Kaine's positions, already, it's gone beyond gays and abortion and it now includes anti-labor and anti-union ideology. This is an example of creeping conservatism in our party.

"The conservatives believe that the have-nots need discipline and punishment" - Two Americas

Yup! that's why when it comes time for the flies we have drawn with out dilute conservative honey to open their minds and wallets (tax dollars) we shall see who is affected and who is not.

"...the liberals believe that the have-nots should be treated nicely - with kindness and sympathy." - Two Americas

Yes and in thinking this way, they miss the point. We simply want to be treated as full citizens of this country with full legal rights. I don't want their forbearance, patience, or sympathy. I do expect people to have some moral compass and to stand up for civil rights and human rights.

I will not sit up, bark and roll over and play cute, so as not to ruffle their feathers, which always leads to the fake allies saying, "But now you've turned me off, I am against you. So there!"

WTF?

Great post 2 A's! thoughtful and much to digest.

Thank you for the kind words, too. :hi:

21. "Why should straights care about gay rights?"
Because when we deny justice to anyone, we deny it to everyone. You can find this ethic in every faith and every philosophy and most ideaologies in different words; until all are free, none are free.
