I'm getting weary of straight people trying to set the parameters
for how GLBT people should attempt to get the human rights that they are entitled to. It just reeks of condescension, among other things.

I really am. Sigh.

I just had to get that out. :grouphug:

of us, I just don't want to be condescended to by THEM either. it's not that i care that they disagree so much as how patronizing they can be about it like they are somehow more enlightened and above us all with the "you shrill gays are the reason why straight folk don't like us" schtick. the shrill screamers are who make things happen, not the docile folks who wait around hoping some politician in DC will do the right thing without goading from below.

the heat is turned up. sometimes we come off more shrill and one-sided than how we really feel. I am actually more pissed at DUers than I am at Obama. I EXPECT politicians to behave a certain way, they have everybody and their uncle tugging at their sleeves demanding things. I realize this. our job is to get up there with the rest to tug on their sleeve, too. you don't tell people with legitimate concerns to shut the fuck up and sit down. politicians can take it. and besides, all we are doing is yelling on a discussion board anyway.

That 'truths' post was one of the most condescending, outrageously false things I've read - being sternly lectured by some straight guy on why it's such a groovy gig for us to have Obama give Warren a sheen of credibility.

I love it when we're called 'hysterics', too - code word for fag. Nice people around here.

our straight allies. there was a very detailed point- by- point refutation of that 'truths" post and i believe it was by a straight person. I could be wrong and don't mind being corrected if i am but i think it was. many like to frame this as gays vs straights and it really ISN'T.

"...human rights don't allow for shades of gray. GLBT folks are either human, or less than human. There is no gray area..."

While we DU GLBT persons truly the feel the homophobic bigotry, we also feel the care, concern AND COURAGE of those who seemingly "don't have a dog in this fight" stand up for us and our civil and human rights. And let us never forget, we truly do have many, many courageous friends and allies that support us because they know it is the right thing to do. And that is the type of people they are. So whenever the haters, deniers and apologists work your last gay-fucking-nerve, remember we do have friends--good friends--here at DU.

39. We all have a dog in this fight, Gay or not
The churches won't stop if they win the war against the LBGT community- They'll be happy to put me in jail for premarital sex or "deviant" sexual behavior next.

Understanding that is a big problem for some people. They think their "rights" are untouchable. Nothing could be further from the truth.

37. FWIW, your rights are recognized in my house.
Despite the religiousity of Ohio, at least there are a few square feet of sanity here. If you come visit, you may also get a free meal.

If a gay couple is a committed relationship, they already are married in fact. The problem is the law is out of step with the emotional and social reality. All gay couples seem to want is the legal protection for the marriages they already have.

The political reality, unfortunately, is dominated by loud individuals who think all morality comes from a stone-age book. That book was written by people who think every animal lives within walking distance of Noah's house. I don't agree with politicians who hesitate on the issue of gay marriage and job discrimination. Nevertheless, I see why they do it. If they want to get anything done for the country as a whole including making us more secular, they can't offend the religious sensibilities of a majority of voters. I really don't know what the answer is. Allowing a hate-mongering con artist to bless the new presidency does not seem like a step in the right direction to me. I do point out when I can that there is no public policy reason to oppose gay rights or to think of gay people as evil in anyway that does not apply also to the general population.

53. Perhaps
the meaning is, heteros are not "straight" but twisted, in their yerning for the "other", to feel complete and straight together. Most homos are heteros in that sense too. Funny that. But bis, there are some funny lot, who don't need the "other" to feel complete.

But perhaps this is the wrong place. Whatever.
