Washington County schools hire own lobbyist
by Maya Blackmun, The Oregonian

HILLSBORO -- School districts in Washington County and the Northwest Regional Education Service District will have a well-known Salem lobbyist looking out for their interests in the next Oregon Legislature.

The county's districts and the ESD have hired Ozzie Rose of Martinez & Sons, a retired longtime executive director of the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators, who has lobbied on behalf of the Oregon School Activities Association.

Jim Mabbott, the NW Regional ESD's superintendent, expects the lobbying to cost up to $50,000 per year to be divided between the county's seven districts and the ESD.

Mabbott said Rose, who is in the state capitol full-time, will be able to focus on their districts' unique needs -- such as fast growing schools; something that the districts don't have the staffing to accomplish now.
