A woman accused of murdering her four-day-old baby girl by trying to kill herself with rat poison while pregnant has become a cause célèbre for US women's groups and civil liberties organizations.

A few days later, on 23 December, she went to a hardware store, bought rat poison pellets, went back to her flat in Indianapolis and swallowed some. But she did not die immediately and was persuaded by friends to go to hospital.

She was given treatment to counteract the poison and gave birth on New Year's Eve, but her daughter, Angel, suffered seizures and died after four days.

There's really no way anyone could make a judgement about what happened and what should happen to this woman based on what you posted.

She poisoned herself and her baby.

The baby was born alive.

She took the baby off life support.

The baby died from poisoning.

These are the facts in the case, as they will be presented.

So make a judgment, express an opinion, explore the concepts.


As for my editing remarks, I had to delete the thread because I quoted 5, not 4, paragraphs (sentences really). A second edit would have made it all better. Instead I had to rewrite the thread. That's lame.

What I am saying is that a 3-4 day old infant meets and LEGAL definition of a person. No one debates that (except me, see other thread). It was not anencephalic, where there could be some debate.

A human being died due to the actions of another human being. And no one on the left thinks there should be any repercussions.

11. If she is mentally ill she should be put on trial, evaluated, and get an NGI.

NGI = Not Guilty by reason of Insanity.

And then be committed for care. Until such time as she is no longer a danger to herself or others.

Doing something rash does not make one mentally ill. Doing something without taking in the moral consequences does not make one mentally ill.




Editing rules being lame:

I trimmed the article down from full text to 5 sentences (not even paragraphs), and instead of letting me edit it again, I have to delete it. That by any standard is a lame policy, especially when the next day I saw a 5 paragraph and a 6 paragraph article getting no attention.

15. Not every post breaking rules is acted on since there are so many. If they aren't noticed, or

alerted on, frequently they pass. The editing rules you think are lame are due to copyright laws. Several forums, blogs, websites, have had legal action taken against them for posting more than the 3-4 paragraphs. Yes, it sucks when an article is written that each sentecne is its own paragraph, and no DU hasn't had to pay a fine. But having to pay for legal help to fight such legal action is not what the Du administration with to do with their money or time.

Yes, you hear about the back alleys and coat hangers, but there were other instances where young women plain just took their own lives, and that of their unborn.

Didn't Indiana just vote to end funding to Planned Parenthood, and make abortion very, very difficult? I hate to say this, but roll back the clock, and you will more young women doing the same as this woman, possibly even worse.

I am an old lady. I don't want the young women of today to experience what many of my and earlier generations had to live through.
