Marathon Monday 2009 was a success for Boston sports, as the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics were all victorious yesterday.

Celtics

The Celtics needed a three-pointer from Ray Allen with two seconds remaining to secure a 118-115 victory over the relentless Chicago Bulls, who got 42 points from Ben Gordon, as he and Allen (30 points) put on a second half show. The series is now tied at a game apiece and headed to Chicago for game three on Thursday night.

Frank Dell’Apa has Paul Pierce and the Celtics happy with the split, knowing that they have yet to play their best game. Mark Murphy has the Celtics lucky to escape, with Chicago once again dictating the pace of the game. Robert Lee has Ray Allen picking the perfect time to break out of his shooting slump. Scott Souza has Allen getting redemption for his poor game one. Bill Doyle has Allen putting a quick end to his shooting slump. Jeff Howe has game two at a glance.

Steve Bulpett has Ray Allen fulfilling every kid’s dream with a last second shot to win a playoff game. Mike Fine says that Allen lives for these moments. Julian Benbow has Ray Allen stepping up big in the second half after struggling for the first six periods of the series. Alan Siegel has Allen helping the Celtics avoid disaster with his huge second-half performance. Lenny Megliola says Allen’s performance showed a shooter at his finest.

Souza’s notebook has Danny Ainge paying a surprise visit to practice yesterday. Doyle’s notebook observes that Celtics coach Doc Rivers grew up in Chicago rooting for the Bulls, while Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro grew up in Massachusetts rooting for the Celtics. Jim Fenton’s notebook has Rondo bouncing back from a sprained ankle to post his impressive line for the night.

Bruins

The Bruins pushed their hated rivals to the brink last night, recording a 4-2 victory in Montreal that puts them up 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Steve Conroy has the Bruins brushing off the Canadiens’ best punch last night. Fluto Shinzawa has the Bruins slamming the door on Montreal last night even without the services of Milan Lucic. Joe Haggerty has a few things he picked up from last night’s win. Mike Loftus says that the Bruins are proving too deep for the Canadiens in many ways.

Kevin Paul Dupont has the Bruins absorbing a furious first period by the Canadiens. Stephen Harris has Michael Ryder getting skillful revenge on his old team. Mick Colageo has Byron Bitz doing more than just filling in last night. Sean Farrell has the Canadiens just about beaten…but not quite. Harris gets Jacques Demers to weigh in on the Bruins. Nick Cammarota has plenty of emotion on display last night.

Conroy’s notebook has Lucic accepting the blame for his suspension. Shinzawa’s notebook has Byron Bitz doing quite well in his playoff debut filling in for Lucic.

Red Sox

The Red Sox wrapped up a four game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles yesterday afternoon with an 12-1 smackdown at Fenway Park. It was the fifth win in a row for Boston.

Paul Jarvey has David Ortiz showing signs of life in yesterday’s win with a triple and a double. Maureen Mullen has Justin Masterson looking strong and using all his pitches against the Orioles. Ron Chimelis has the bats coming alive for the Red Sox yesterday. Amalie Benjamin has David Ortiz coming alive and using the wall twice yesterday. Michael Silverman has the Red Sox bats and Masterson sweeping away the O’s. Daniel Barbarisi has Masterson looking comfortable and efficient on the mound.

Chimelis has a look at Masterson, who does the job - any job for the Red Sox. Nick Cafardo says that the flexible arm of Masterson is coming in handy for the Red Sox right now. Paul Kenyon has Masterson saying that he is comfortable in any role that the Red Sox want to use him in. Sean McAdam has a look at David Ortiz shifting into gear. Dan Lamothe has Ortiz showing that he is alive and well. Barbarisi has a Tweak in mechanics helping Ortiz get back on track.

Jarvey’s notebook has the early start not impacting Masterson at all. Chimelis’ notebook says that wrist surgery is probable for Jed Lowrie. Benjamin’s notebook has the Sox hoping that Lowrie will be back by July. Silverman’s notebook has more on the surgery for Lowrie.
