What stupid tie breaker rules (Big 12)!
Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 12:47 PM by El Supremo
1. If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative
2. If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.

1. The records of the three teams will be compared against each other
2. The records of the three teams will be compared within their division
3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5 and 6)
4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents;
5. The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play shall be the representative
6. The team with the best overall winning percentage shall be the representative
7. The representative will be chosen by draw.

My opinion:
#5 should not be even considered or at least be last on the list
#6&7 would only take place if teams come up with the same BCS rankings - what is the chance of that?
#6 should be #5
#6 should be the team that has not gone to the championship most recently.

Fire away!

1. I agree that it's a bad tiebreaker
I believe that the only way such a three-way tie could come about would be if all three teams went 1-1 against each other, as happened this year. In that case, I think using point differential in those three games would be a better way to go. Last night during the game Brent Musberger suggested point differential against common opponents (which in this case would be the 3 south division teams plus Kansas. That would be better than using the BCS as well.

I'm not keen on using the team that's not gone most recently as a tiebreaking criteria, personally.

2. If USC loses to UCLA, this is the way the Pac 10 will do it:

Rose Bowl Selection Procedures

If a Conference team is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) ranking system it shall participate in the National Championship Game designated by the BCS. If that is not the case, the following procedures will determine the Pacific-10 Rose Bowl Representative. The Pacific-10 Rose Bowl representative shall be that member's team with the best won-lost percentage record in Conference games. If, however, the records in Conference games of two or more members are identical, determination of the Rose Bowl representative shall be as follows:

a. Two-Team Tie.
The winner of the game between the two teams shall be the representative.

b. Multiple-Team Ties.
(1) When three or more teams are tied in Conference play, if one has defeated all others, it shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If that is not the case, a comparison of the tied teams' records against the other tied teams shall be made and the team having the best record against the other tied teams shall be the Rose Bowl representative. If two or more teams are still tied after this comparison, the appropriate two-team or multiple-team tie-breaking procedures shall be repeated among those teams still under consideration.

(2) If more than two teams are still tied after the process above is completed, each remaining tied team's record against the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings shall be compared, with the procedure continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, each team's collective record against the tied teams as a group shall be used.

If at any point in the process the multiple-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tie-breaking procedure shall be applied.

If more than two teams are still tied after comparing their records all the way through the Conference standings, the team among the tied teams with the highest ranking in the final BCS standings shall be the Rose Bowl representative.

If a tie remains, the teams most recently earning Rose Bowl or Bowl Championship Series automatic selection shall be eliminated.

They use the BCS rankings too. But the last criterium eliminates the most recent Rose Bowl team.

5. So in the case of OU/Tech/Texas, that would still result in the BCS rankings
(Assuming you only go down the standings within the division, since not all opponents in the other division would be common to all three teams ...)

That's great for the Pac 10, but I'm still not fond of the final criteria being the elimination of the most recent team. It doesn't seem any fairer than granting it to the defending champion as a last resort, if the defending champ is in the mix. Might as well simply draw straws, at that point.

3. No point differentials!
I hate it when teams try to run up the score. That is not good sportsmanship. And it leads to unnecessary injuries.

Musberger should go back to broadcasting school a learn how not to be a fool.

4. At least it's something that relates to the game on the field
rather than lobbying, etc. I don't think using point differential in the games between the three would really encourage running up the score, since it's rare that teams play with an eye towards a three-way tie that goes down to the 5th tiebreaker.

6. Yep; although, I think you should start cheering for Missouri.
You could worm your way into the BCS title game without having even played for the conference championship.

I like chaos. I want the system to fail so it's blown up.

I also went to A&M, so whining Longhorns is always fun for me. I don't get much else.

7. I don't care who goes to the silly BCS title game.
Being Big 12 champs and winning whatever bowl game is more important to me. The National Championship is still "mythical".
