Why was there an Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day?

Has it just become more popular lately? The Coca-Cola 600, I mean. I saw part of it on television yesterday, thinking it was the Indy 500, and most of the big names were in that, which surprised me. I don't follow Nascar, but I do recognize lots of the names.
