U of Kentucky asked to put US flag on jerseys
I caught this in today's Lexington Herald-Leader. It's good to see UK isn't caving in to these folks.

1. I would have thought the soldiers are too busy trying to stay alive
to give a rat's ass which uniforms had a flag on it and which didn't. Are they really looking closely at the sports uniforms and if they don't see a flag patch, say to each other "well that team doesn't support us" ??

How petty.

2. I am a huge Kentucky fan, know this woman personally
and I feel very sorry for her and the mother's loss but this is what they choose to spend their time on? This will somehow honor their fallen soldier - a damn patch on a basketball uniform? Why not conduct a campaign to see that the soldiers left in Iraq have armor, or warm clothes or maybe just get them home?

An inane, meaningless gesture to make a person "feel better" about their country when watching a sporting event is just plain stupid. Sorry, but it is. How about picking something significant to help the soldiers instead of pandering to your own useless symbolism? I love the American flag but it is just an object - I would feel much better about my country if the poor guy hadn't died for a senseless, corrupt war. Where is their outrage over that?

The idea that this is showing support for the soldiers is just too small minded and petty to warrant one line in a newspaper much less an entire column.

5. Great post...
I thought it was also interesting that the person responsible for the decision not to put a flag patch on the jerseys, the equipment manager, was a WW2 vet and an ex-Marine. He seems to see this for what it is...an empty gesture.

Do the soldiers REALLY keep track of which teams have flag patches and which teams don't?
