Serena Williams looks like a buffalo
Well, a lime green buffalo.

At least there's no such thing as a butt fault.

A few years ago I posted that Serena would reach 400 pounds a decade or two after her playing career ended. At this rate, I might have to play the over.

14. Amazing to me why some think it's "against the law" to talk about a women........
athletes weight. They'll come arrest a coach if he EVEN intimates a woman athlete is overweight..... and a high number of them are. I'm amazed watching women college gymnasts on TV. Most are just plain fat. And that sport is a jumping sport that should require leanness.

Sports talkers are all over a male athlete that has extra body fat. They jump on his coach, as well.

18. Gymnasts Not Overweight
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 09:47 AM by erpowers
What gymnast can to show a picture of who is overweight? I have no problem with a person saying a female athlete is overweight. However, I find it hard to believe that someone can say a girl that is about 90-110 pounds is overweight. I have watched gymnastics competitions. I will admit that I have not watched any this year or last year, but I have never seen a female gymnast that is overweight. I do not think I have seen a male gymnast that is overweight. I do think that Shaq is overweight. I think athletes like him get criticized so much in that he is getting paid 20-30 million a year to play a sport. It seems that his being overweight can affect his longeviety as a baskeball player or athlete. How would you like to pay a person 20-30 million a year and have them play at a sub par level?

Too fat to perform at TOP efficeincy in running, jumping and tumbling. Don't care what anyone says. For that type of sport they should be ripped. Like male wrestlers. Body fat as low as is healthy. I see chunkies out there and I'm guessing coach's are just too afraid of calling them on it....... they'd bench male athletes for being that fat....... for fear of them "catching" anorexia and dying.

29. Two things.
1. It's not a law but it's certainly in bad taste to insult someone's size and call them a "buffalo", so of course there will be some backlash to that especially to those of us who think she's pretty damn hot how she is.

2. Female Gymnasts are not fat. It's people like you who espouse that opinion that make Gymnasts, Ballet Dancers, Runway Models feel they have to be so skinny that they end up with serious eating disorders that endanger their lives. But go ahead, keep pushing that "girls are fat" meme.

We need more Nicole Richie skeletal women in the world apparently.

She's built with a lot of sexy curves... the fact that she can excel at and play top notch Tennis is a ridiculous bonus. Most Tennis players are really thin but Serena harnesses that extra size to give her more power. It's nice to not have all cookie cutter athletes.

9. It's a shame.
She hasn't been interested in her fitness for a couple years now and her poor fitness is really messing up her game. I hate to imagine what will happen to her when she has to play people who make her move...quickly.

Should be an interesting AO without Justine, with Lindsay pregnant, and with Kim in her retirement tour. I just hope Screamapova doesn't win.

10. When you suffer a knee, ankle or foot injury...
the first thing the doctors tell you is to lose weight to get the stress off. I remember the Mets' Gary Carter lost about 30 lbs. for that reason and Mike Piazza did too, I believe.

The wheels can't take that stress. And she needs quickness on top of it.

I played competitive tennis and I don't know how you can have a serious regimine and all that weight. Even I lost a lot.

12. Some opinions on Serena from a top tennis discussion site
This is the site I check for informed tennis talk during the big matches. They are slightly more blunt about Serena than I was.

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=113356

"She's not going to lose because of her legs. She's going to lose because she's a disgusting fatass and any top-level player will run her off the court."

and

"Grimjack, I must say I agree with you here. If she were really "serious" then she would drop 25 pounds and get her act together. She used to be in intimidating physical shape but now she looks like she could win an eating contest at the local Krispy Kreme and should get two seats on the airplane so her bubble booty doesn't bubble over the edge.

I'm not trying to bash Serena but her "fitness" right now is embarassing and shame on the other women players if they can't stop her in this ridiculously debilitated form."

:eyes:

I'm not a big Serena fan but she still plays better than many of the top women on the tour. She's not in ideal playing condition I grant you that.

And just because other anonymous people on other web sites comment poorly on her weight doesn't make it right. Sheesh.

She proved it with a gut-ty comeback tonight over Petrova, who has a remarkable tendency to choke in big matches.

Big props to Serena. Big everything.

No doubt she doesn't take off the green outfit because she could never get it back on.

Another tough match in the next round but I'm rooting for gigantasaurus to keep the flub rolling.

21. Chris Evert was correct
Maybe six months ago she wrote an open letter to Serena, emphasizing Serena was wasting her career by failing to stay in shape, focusing on other things besides tennis, and basically ruining a chance to be the best player in the history of the sport.

This Australian Open demonstrated how right she was. Serena won decisively tonight over another seeded player. She is playing better and better as this tournament goes on.

Yet last year she barely played at all, and I've never seen a top caliber athlete in this type of horrible condition. Hell, even Phil Man Boobs Mickelson trimmed down in the offseason and looks better than in years.

Womens tennis is down right now, better looking babes and lower caliber play. Players like Davenport and Capriati reached the normal 30ish end of the line. When a Sharapova is number one in the world you know you've got trouble. She is a banger with very little variety in her game or ability to adjust during a match. Serena and Venus should be clear cut #1 and #2 with moderate dedication but apparently they've got better things to do.

27. Disagree
I disagree with your statement that "It's hard for females to get her kind of musculature just from lifting. I think you should take a look at female basketball players. A number of female baskebtall players have muscles like Serena Williams. Also, I think one thing that is the same for females and males in regards to weight lifting is body type. A person's body type can have an effect on the amount of muscle a person can gain. Women like Tina Thompson, Serena Williams, and Sheryl Swoops should be able to gain a good amount of muscle just by lifting weights. It is also possible that they took things like muscle milk and whey protein. There are some people in weight lifting who say that if a person does not use at least whey protein they cannot gain any muscle. Women like Paris Hilton, Hallie Berry, and Lindsay Lohan might have some problems gaining muscles by just lifting weights. At least it might take them longer than some other women.

Rematch of Sharapova's Wimbledon breakthrough a few years ago. Serena saved set point in the first set tonight vs. Vaidisova.

I'd definitely pick Serena if she were in reasonable condition and had played a full schedule of late, but here I'll tab and root for Maria.

Sheesh. Last year at this tournament the cameras were all over Baghdatis' gorgeous girlfriend Camille Neviere. This year it's Serena's lime ass.

to make conditioning as big an issue as it is with the men - whose matches go on for FAAAAARRRR too long.

It's like watching Kirby Puckett play tennis.

But she still appears to be grossly out of shape. Kornheiser and Wilbon were talking about this.

because they will not allow the women to play best of five.

Serena likes the high life. Same with Bagdhatis. Big deal. All these uber-athletes are bizarre people leading deranged lives.

And yes almost all of them are using variants of performance enhancing items. That's what we've got these days.

Ever been to a professional tennis tournament? If not check it out. It's a circus.

The men's matches - particularly with the more powerful rackets - have a much higher percentage of aces than they used to have. That's just not fun/interesting to watch.

38. Several factors
of which the leading and foremost is the change in racket technology. The players are 4-5 inches taller and 30-40 pounds heavier. No more Eddie Dibbs' in tennis. They are also receiving daily massages, nutritional advice and have hired trainers. Little is left to chance.

However enjoy what is easily the most gifted personage in all of sports for the moment, Mr. Federer. He is on a par with Gretzky, Edwin Moses, Michael Jordan, Vasily Alexeev and Martina Navratilova as regards someone who is able to alter the way the sport is considered.

Roddick coming in brimming with confidence got 6 games. And Federer can play any style of game to suit the moment.

they just rode in on the heels of Martina who was only topped by Gretzky as the most dominant athlete of the 20th century. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the minority of tennis fanatics who actually pulls for Venus and Serena, (hope Serena beats Sharapova)but neither of them have the game or the history to transform the game of tennis. They're just merely great players prone to spotty play.

The Williams sisters changed the scope of the game as we know it today.
Heck, Martina Hingis was forced to retire because she couldn't handle the power game of the Williams...once the Williams came on tour, women's tennis became a power game rather than a finese game like when there was Hingis, Evertt, Seles, etc...

Since the Williams, it's become about power, power, power...not to mention how they changed tennis from being more than just a country club sport.

she had back problems. Also if you've ever seen Seles play you'd know there is absolutely zero finesse in her game.

Nope there were plenty of power players in women's tennis at the time of the William's sisters peak just none, except Davenport, as good.

It was Navratilova on the heels of King and Casals that transformed the women's game and let us just throw in Steffi Graf who until Gonzales (who will lose to Federer)had the best and hardest forehand in the history of tennis pound for pound. Apologies to Lendl and Aaron Krickstein.

The Williams changed the game, just my opinion but I am sticking to it.

Sure, King and then Martina Nav. and then Graf did their part when they came on and up on the tour and the King era probably more so than anyone but in the last 10 or so years, the Williams' changed the game as we know it today.

--not back problems--and she successfully sued her shoe manufacturer. And had several very painful surgeries over the course of her retirement. And now she is once again one of the top players in the world.

I wish the Bolletieri-inspired game would just die off because it's so uninteresting, but it appears that it's here to stay. The sport if poorer for it.

58. Fed in straights
Edited on Sun Jan-28-07 06:31 AM by Awsi Dooger
7-6, 6-4, 6-4

Gonzalez had two set points in the first while serving at 5-4 but missed a semi-open court with a forehand down the line that hit high in the net. Federer broke then dominated the tiebreaker.

Not Federer's best tonight but that's fairly ridiculous when you consider he had 23 winners and only 7 unforced errors over the final two sets. First man since Borg in '80 to sweep through a major without losing a set.

Now the long anticipation to the French. Roger can probably earn GOAT status minus the French, but with one it's very tough to deny. Nadal has been increasingly vulnerable lately but whether anyone can step up and deal with his looping forehand on clay is another matter.

59. Serena definitely slimmed down somewhat during the tournament
I thought so as I was watching the tournament unfold over two weeks, that she wasn't as massive as when I posted this thread. Many posters on the tennis talk sites were saying she had lost weight from match to match. Finally I saw a partial clip of her first round match on eMule, and it's blatant. Hard to put a number on it but I'd say at least 5 pounds.
