Congratulations Rice Owls - first bowl game in 45 years
The 7-5 Owls will play in the New Orleans Bowl in the Super Dome December 22nd against either Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette or Middle Tennessee. The Owls last bowl game was the 1961 Bluebonnet Bowl. The Houston school expects a big turnout for their bowl game because of its close proximity to New Orleans. Owl Mania to sweep the Quarter. I guess they'll hang out at HOOTers on Decatur..

1. Then it's not the Sugar Bowl this year . . .
. . . it's the Rice Bowl.

If they get beat badly, then it's the Rice Cooker.

3. 6-6 teams are in bowls
well, UCLA has been invited to a bowl, and they'll be 6-6 if they lose the USC this weekend. There are half a million bowl games these days, so a lot of 7-5 teams make it.

5. A lot of that has to do with the fan base.
The Alamo Bowl chose Iowa over Minnesota because Minnesota fans aren't known to travel as much as Iowa fans. It was a business decision.

Not that I'm complaining ... I'm a student at UI, so I have an obvious bias. That said, I can only pray we don't get our asses handed to us. Again.

6. Rice has good fans.
Always friendly people. I'm fortunate enough to get to go to the College World Series every year because I live near Omaha, and Rice fans have been nothing but courteous and knowledgable. The fans make the team easy to root for.

In other words, congrats Owls!

7. And a great band full of surprises.
They gatored on the field when I lived in Houston years ago.

What do you mean by "gatored"?

9. Did "the alligator"
Got down on their bellies and made like an alligator. Hard to put into words.
