Official Detroit Tigers Magic Number Countdown thread
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 12:55 PM by ih8thegop
The magic number is the number of games a first-place team must win to be guaranteed the title (in this case the AL Central title). A formula for determining a team's magic number is:

M=162-F-G-((S-1)-G)

...in which:

M=Magic number
F=First place team’s # of wins
G=First place team’s # of losses
S=Second place team’s # of losses

The formula decreases by one whenever the first place team wins and whenever the second-place team loses. So when the first-place team beats the second-place team, the magic number decreases by 2.

Therefore, the Detroit Tigers' magic number is:

98

162-41-23-((24-1)-23)

1. Did you see the game last night?
I just knew that we could come back and win it. I think CG is a superstar! (I mean Curtis Granderson, not Carlos Guillen, though he is great too).

It's fun for us. You don't need to READ it if you don't care! I've been faithfully following this team through all the bad years, even ordering the baseball package year after year to watch them, buying gear, sticking by my guys, listening to my Tigers CD at the beginning of every season, and I sure as hell plan to enjoy this now.

17. Briggs and Tiger Stadium also
Grew up on the east side and always parked for free by the old Tip Top bakery
and then walked the three blocks to the stadium.
I was in the upper deck center field bleachers when Kirk Gibson hit the homer
out of the ball yard and onto the lumberyard across the street.
We ran up to the back wall and saw it bounce on the rooftop! Awesome.

22. Introducing: My modified magic number countdown:
http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/magic/magicexpo.shtml

Another way to end up with the same result is to use the formula:

M (magic number) = 163 - Wins (first place team) - Losses (second place team)

With the Tigers currently at 51-25 and Chicago at 49-25, the Tigers' magic number would be 163-51-25=87.

Another important "magic number" would be the one that guarantees us a playoff appearance (for the first time since 1987). The three divisional leaders are automatically in the playoffs, along with the one remaining "wild card" team with the best record. Oakland, Boston, and Detroit are currently the divisional leaders, with Chicago being the "wild card".
The wild card magic number would compare the Tiger's numbers with the next best team behind Chicago. Currently that is the Yankees who are 41-30. The magic number to guarantee the Tigers a playoff appearance would therefore be:
163-51-30=82.

What's most amazing is that the Tigers have shaved 15 numbers off their "magic number" since this thread began. I know that what matters most is how you play AFTER the All Star Game, but I still am astounded by this team.

Only one down in the loss column........

It's very frustrating, we've won 14 of the last 18 and can't make any headway, but I am guessing Tiger fans feel the same, can't put any distance tween them and us....

We still have 16 games left with the Tigers and they should be interesting. We both also have alot of games left with the Twins who will have a say in the division.....

Congrats on a great half season, congrats to the best division in baseball... The second half should be one for the ages....

At Saturday's Tigers/Mariners game, as we were leaving, a spontaneous cheer arose from the many Tiger fans exiting the game - "Let's Go, Tigers!" It reminded me a lot of the feeling that I got in 1997 - that it was a very special time.

68. I must've missed that.
(I was going through a divorce and relocation to the west coast at the time. Those years are foggy.) I've refused to support professional baseball (in particular) and football since they're building stadiums with public subsidies for corporatists. When Joe Sixpack has to pay both taxes and full price to attend a game and Robert Baron wallows in a taxpayer-subsidied air-conditioned skybox on the corporate (consumer's) dime, the equity is just wrong.

It seems everytime they have a great team I am not in town. 1968 I was there for half of it, 1984 living in LA and this year in the Seattle area. Oh well, I still like the way Leyland has them playing. Just stay away from injuries........... :toast:

When I left work (I'm on the west coast) it was 4-3 Detroit. When I got home, thanks to the messed up Seattle transit system these days, it was already 8-3. I took the dogs out in the back yard for ONE MINUTE, came back in the house, and it was 9-3! I missed C-Mo's home run.

96. ** 41 **
Sox must have lost tonight. 163 - Tiger wins (76) - White Sox losses (46) = 41.

The magic number to clinch a playoff spot would be 40, with Minnesota being the team fighting for the wild card spot.

Magic number to secure home field advantage throughout the playoffs would be 44, with the Yankees currently being the competition for home field advantage.

I would like to tell him from the bottom of my heart: QUIT SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH!

I don't see that he has helped the Tiges in the LEAST, though I suppose there must have been something about him that they thought would be useful. Chris Shelton might have fallen off his early season numbers, but they played better when he was in their lineup.

138. Chris compiled most
of his numbers the first three weeks of the season. Casey has much more major league experience. The Tigers are slumping a bit now, proving once again, the baseball season is a marathon not a sprint. As long as they are in first, the length of the lead doesn't matter.
As Leyland has said all along, 'we'll see if we are good enough to win'. I'm grateful I get to watch the Tigers and the Twins tonight!
To be pulling for the Tigers in September hasn't happended since 1987 and I love it! Any thing we get is gravy, no matter what happens. :)

and there isn't anything Leyland can do to change that in his players. They are playing not to lose instead of winning. If they fade, well, they fade but will be that much better next year, barring injury. If they catch fire again and go into the playoffs on a high note, look out!

Tigers finally found their bats that had been missing the last 6 weeks.

164. Looks like you will keep the AL Central lead one more night
Though the Twins are up 5-2 over Boston, you look to beat up on the White Sox tonight with your 4-0 lead. It is not over until it is over though the Tigers look to be in the playoffs either way. The White Sox look to be the odd team out.

165. ** 11 ** Tigers beat Chicago 6-2
The Minnesota Twinkies won earlier, so they remain 1/2 game back. Detroit's magic number to clinch the division is now 11, to clinch a wild card appearance, it's down to 5.

174. Ah, 1984! Game winning home run off of Gossage I believe.
I remember seeing film of this from the field. You could hear the conversations on the mound and dugout.
Dick Williams wanted to pull Gossage and not have him pitch to Kirk and Gossage said he would strike him out.
Kirk was in the batting circle and Sparky Anderson yells out to him, "He says he's gonna strike you out!".
Kirk says "What?". Sparky reiterates, "He says he's gonna strike you out!". Gibson answers, "Oh yeah?".
Then walks up to the plate and blasts an upper deck dinger! It was beautiful.

Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 10:57 PM by Viking12
If the Tigers win 3 and the Twins all 4 of their remaining games, they'll tie. The 1st tiebreaker is head-to-head matchups and the Tigers lead the season series 11-8. Time is runnin' out for my Twins.
