Adrian Beltre...
What the fuck is the deal with this guy? And when will the Mariners finally decide that he was one of the biggest wastes of money in Seattle pro sports history? (Bosworth, your reign may soon be over)Any long-time Dodgers fans have any insight as to why this jackass is getting $15M per yer to bat below .200??

1. Because the M's paid expecting him to repeat one good season
And completely ignoring the rest of his career.

2. Bingo
He had one great year with the Dodgers and that was in his contract year in 2004. It's a mistake that many teams make and later regret.

3. And when will the Mariners finally decide...
What exactly is their option even if they have concluded that "he was one of the biggest wastes of money in Seattle pro sports history?"

People act like they could go back in time and change history if only they'd just realize the terrible mistake they made.

They took a gamble and it blew up in their face. Same could be said about the Yankees with Pavano and Jaret Wright. They knew that this wasn't a safe signing going in. It was always high risk/high reward.

Nothing to be done about it now. He is about as untradeable as a player gets.

4. What could they do about it??
Well, for starters, they could quit putting him in the fucking line-up every day...or, send his sorry ass down to Tacoma for some remedial hitting instruction...

5. He's not eligible to be sent to the minor leagues
As for benching him, yeah maybe, but it's not like the M's have some hotshot prospect ready to plug in at 3rd. Neither Willie Bloomquist or Mike Morse are attractive options.

Perhaps if the M's wanted to shift Lopez back over to 3rd and bring up Asdrubal Cabrera up to play 2nd, but I'd hate to rush Cabrera because he could be special.

In the near term, without a worthy replacement, I think you keep him in the lineup for his defense alone. A few extra days off, sure. I don't think you can make a long term change in the lineup until Cabrera is ready to make the jump, and even then you have to consider the implications of a position change on young Lopez.

I cringe at Beltre's performance as much as the next guy, but the M's poor roster construction leaves little to be done about it.
