Dropkick!
And I can't believe it! I was just discussing it with a friend 2 weeks ago.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Flutie converts NFL's first drop kick in 64 years

NFL.com wire reports

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (Jan. 1, 2006) -- Doug Flutie added another oddity to his football résumé when he converted a drop kick in the fourth quarter of the New England Patriots' game against the Miami Dolphins.

<snip>

Rest of the story here:http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/NE/9133564

------------------

A lot of people, I'm sure, didn't know it was still legal. Until today, that is.

4. Aw, that's not fair.
Flutie is a nice guy. He did some drop-kicks in the CFL, from what I understand. Belichick is a real fan and scholar of the NFL and I think wanted to tip his hat to the old days. He certainly wasn't doing this to show off - it was just to inject a little fun into an otherwise meaningless game.

Yes, I'm from Miami.

That was a good game...for Flutie and Boston College.

3. I was just looking at this recently.
I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I saw the highlight. I imagine that you can still dropkick for 3 points too. http://www.profootballhof.com/history/release.jsp?release_id=1481

Keep your eyes peeled for the NFL Films segment on the art of the dropkick. They've got a reason to plug it into a show again(They filmed a w/Jim "the Punky QB" McMahon when he was with the Packers.Wonder if he and Flutie ever discussed it.).

I was watching the Pack at a sports bar when a guy watching the Pats said, "Flutie just kicke a field goal or something." I knew RIGHT THEN, before the replay, what had happened!

edited for stupidity.

Think you know football?

OK, hot shot, you make the call:

The Seattle Seahawks on Sunday are facing a third-and-8 at the Green Bay Packers’ 11-yard line. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck takes the snap out of the shotgun formation – which he’s never done in any game coached by Mike Holmgren, but work with me here – only instead of throwing a pass, he drops the ball on the ground, then kicks it. Against all odds, the ball wobbles over the crossbar.

Do the officials ...
A) penalize Seattle for an illegal kick?

B) rule the play dead, as they would on a clock-stopping spike?

C) credit Seattle with a field goal?

The answer is C. It’s a field goal, although the officials likely would throw a 15-yard flag on the visitors for unconventional thinking. It’s been 64 years since a drop-kick was successfully executed in the NFL – Chicago’s Ray McLean used it to convert an extra point in the 1941 championship game – and 68 years since Detroit’s Dutch Clark scored a field goal on a drop-kick.

Sixty-eight years.

As Ron Fairly might say, “It’s been a while since a field goal in the NFL was drop-kicked: 68 years. That ought to give you an idea of how long it’s been.”
