New York Mets 2011 Ticket Sales Dismal: MLB Report
from Forbes:

As part of their pitch the franchise is worth at least $1 billion, the Mets, owned by Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, are telling potential investors in the team that next year attendance at Citi Field will reach 3 million.

That seems like a pipe dream. An internal report circulating the offices of Major League Baseball shows that thus far the Mets have sold just 600,000 tickets for the 2011 season. This implies that the team has sold less than 7,000 season tickets. In contrast, the MLB report shows that the New York Yankees have sold 3 million tickets for this season.

Opening day is still a week away. And the Mets did get 3.2 million at the gate in 2009, Citi Field’s first season. But if ticket sales collapse this year it will be very hard to get investors to believe 3 million will come through Citi Field’s turnstiles in 2012.

1. The Mets built an odd stadium.
I know this is slightly off topic, but I don't love $iti field. The rotunda is devoted to a player who never played for the Mets. The stadium is black and orange. If someone was dropped on the pitchers mound and asked to guess where they were, they'd say the SF Giants.

4. If you took "Ticket Sales" out of the title, it would still be accurate.

How the Mets manage to continually spend this much money on a shitty team baffles me. If I were a Mets fan, I'd be pissed and wouldn't want to go to a game. The Mets are proof that you can't simply buy championships.
