UCLA destroys outclassed TCU 6-3 in CWS

Gerrit Cole struck out 13 batters and carried a one-hitter into the seventh inning, and Cody Regis and Jeff Gelalich homered to lead UCLA to a 6-3 victory over TCU in a winners' bracket game at the College World Series on Monday night.

TCU now has to play an elimination game in order to get another shot at the Pac-10's undefeated Bruins. ASU also is still alive, but they already have 1 loss in the double elimination tournament..

1. Yup they did
I don't have cable anymore, thought the game was on today but it was on yesterday so I missed it. (ASU-Clemson) I'll have to find a live feed on here later today when they play South Carolina. I'm very nervous about this whole tournament now since they lost. I really hope they stay alive.

2. "Destroys" sounds a little strong for a 6-3 score.
"Outclassed"? Maybe "outscored" would work better. UCLA must be strong, tho, to be undefeated in the Pac-10.

3. Actually Arizona State swept UCLA
at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Arizona State won the Pac-10 with a 20-7 record. UCLA went 18-9 in conference play.

4. It's Upton.
Any victory, even a one-point scrape, is a "colossal" win for his team (of the day).

Subsequently, when his Frisco Gnats get shut out or blown out, there's not a peep to be heard.

7. "undefeated"
was a reference to UCLA's tournament record. Not in the Pac-10.

8. That isn't correct either
They lost game 1 to Cal State Fullerton in the Super Regionals. Cal State had a chance to put them away in the second game up 6-5 with 2 outs but then UCLA hits a two run homer to take the lead. Cal State tied in the bottom of the 9th but eventually lost it extra innings.

If you mean College World Series, they are undefeated but not the entire tournament including the Super Regionals.

5. What's it like to be a fan of every team in a conference?
You see, I grew up liking only certain teams and usually hating who their conference rivals were.

6. Oh yeah?
So far this year, you've had avatars up of Kansas, Texas, Boise St, and TCU..and that's just off the top of my head. Surely you're not a fan of all those teams...I mean, what about the way you "grew up"?

Stanford is my favorite college baseball team, but they got knocked out in the regionals. Therefore, I'm rooting for the two Pac-10 representatives to continue the conference's traditional success in the CWS. Seems quite logical to me.

12. Logical?
My Big 12 team, Texas was knocked out too. But does that mean I'm going to root for Oklahoma? No way in hell!

Oh. Only KU and UT are in the same conference. And KU is my second favorite Big 12 team. I really don't like any of the other 10.

How can you root for Stanford's rival, if you really like Stanford? Or is it USC or Arizona State? I'm losing track.

13. Stanford's main rival is California
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 03:52 PM by JonLP24
They have a minor rivalry with Notre Dame, the battle for the Legends Trophy. They play each other annually.

I don't think USC-Stanford is an official rivalry but I'm not sure.

On edit-I think I misunderstood your question. I'll leave my post as is anyways.

Arizona State is down 8-0. Ah it's gonna be a long day. I will still watch and hope for something to happen but odds are, they are done. :evilfrown:

16. Well...
that's that. South Carolina teams eliminated Arizona State quite handily. Oh well, maybe next year.

17. Deservedly so. Doubt there will be a "next year."
April 21, 2010

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State is vacating 44 of its 49 victories from the 2007 baseball season and will be reducing scholarships as part of self-imposed sanctions for violating NCAA rules.

The sanctions announced Wednesday follow an internal investigation in association with the Pac-10 that began in January 2008. The NCAA has also begun its own investigation into the violations, which include approximately 500 impermissible telephone calls by the baseball coaching staff from January 2004 to June 2009 and the recruitment of a prospective student-athlete by an impermissible recruiter.

According to a release from the university, several other areas of rules infractions were also uncovered.

ASU is to go before the NCAA committee on infractions later this year....

And the coach was fired.

18. Not the current coach
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 09:05 AM by JonLP24
Pat Murphy "resigned" last year is now a coach of the Padres. I think an assistant or something. I actually posted that article here that no one responded to. http://upload.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=215x125405

Deservedly so? OK.

On edit-Recruiting has been fine and the current crop of players they have should do well next year. I will be rooting for them to go all the way and if they don't fine. I'm used to disappointment when it comes to the teams I root for.
