Bob Ryan:Final tally? We went 6 for 10
Presidential candidates love asking voters this question: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?’’

But my question to you is this: As we approach the end of the decade (and what do you call the first 10 years of a century, anyway?), are you, the Boston sports fan, better off than you were 10 years ago?

The correct answer is yes. Six parades speak for themselves.

I’m not talking about ticket prices and the attendant cost of supporting our professional teams. That’s a sore spot for all of us. I’m simply talking about the psyche of the Boston/New England sports fan. Are you more fulfilled than you were when the 21st century began?
--
Better off than we were 10 years ago? You kidding? We’ve stockpiled enough memories to carry us to the nation’s tri-centennial. But it would be nice if the Bruins could contribute a little something.

3. The Celtics are in good shape for a little longer.
The Pats are on the decline, Bruins up and down and the Sox I don't know yet.

See how things shake out in the offseason, but I can see Miami taking the division next year unless the Pats seriously bolster their pass rush and secondary. And I mean seriously.

5. The Pats are in a transitional year...

I think the next 2-3 might be a lot like this one, then we're going back to the top. We're an aging team, just a bit. I'd rather be us than Indy though...when Manning hits the wall (and I think there will come a time rather sooner than many expect it when he goes from being Superman to merely very-good...like clearly in the top 1/3, but definitely not top-5, at the QB position league-wide.) they're going to become very mediocre very-quickly. San Diego is my bet for the next AFC dynasty though...Rivers is that good and that young still that if they can get one more major piece on the O side of the ball, they're going to be unbeatable. Miami doesn't scare me, they might beat us with alarming frequency but overall I can't say they're a good franchise or getting better quickly.

The Bruins might be world-beaters if the Leafs continue to have a terrible year...they have Toronto's 1st rd. pick from the Kessel trade and both Seguin and Hall are in that "very-special player" category...not Crosby but definitely not much worse. Having seen Hall play, I'd be comfortable saying he's at this point in his career already better than Ovechkin. (They're both goal-scorers who don't bring much else to the table but have one big skill that makes them situationally-great. Physical-play in Ovie's case, deadly speed in Hall's. He's got Kariya speed in a 6'0" ~200lb. frame.) Seguin is more of a two-way player...never going to lead the league in scoring but you can build a dynasty around a guy who's as good in the defensive end as he in is on offense and doesn't turn-over the puck. Either one will win Boston the Northeast division for the next decade more often than not.

I'm guardedly-happy about the Red Sox off-season...the Lowell thing sucks because I think his thumb is going to be the reason we don't pull the trigger on a trade for a much-needed big-bat this off-season. Likewise, I think Buchholz is going to pan out to be nothing and I want to move him while someone is still willing to give us mucho value for his "potential".

12. And I went to all six of 'em.
Got my picture taken with the '04 and '07 World Series trophies, too.

Yeah, baby. My teams could literally not win another championship again in my lifetime and I won't mind. An embarrassment of riches in Boston.

:)
