Mauer Near-Unanimous Pick as MVP

NEW YORK (AP)—Joe Mauer(notes) became only the second catcher in 33 years to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award, finishing first in a near-unanimous vote Monday.

The Minnesota Twins star received 27 of 28 first-place votes and 387 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Yankees teammates Mark Teixeira(notes) (225 points) and Derek Jeter(notes) (193) followed. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera(notes) drew the other first-place vote and was fourth with 171 points, one point ahead of the Angels’ Kendry Morales(notes).

There's always one or two assholes. Like George King, who in 1999 left Pedro Martinez COMPLETELY off the ballot writing an article that basically says he doesn't feel ANY pitcher was sufficiently rounded enough to even be on an MVP ballot. I guess he didn't think anyone would take a look at his 1998 vote where he had BOTH David Wells and Rick Helling (really? Rick Helling?) on his ballot.

Some sportswriters just like to stand out from the crowd, even if it's for stupid reasons.
