Shit, I forgot there was a football game on tonight.
My daughter had her concert tonight, then we got home and I got my wife and daughter to bed and then watched Countdown. Sorry that takes precedence.

Wow. Ricky Williams is fucking fast!

1. I'm following on Box Score update with a refresher
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 11:13 PM by JonLP24
Carolina is running the ball well. 176 total rushing yards. Carolina fought back from 14-3. Now down 24-14.

Nice to read Davone Bess is playing well. I saw the NFL films on him the other day and he had it rough growing up and came in to the league undrafted. I root for him to succeed.

3. Did Miami go for it on 4&3?
I can't tell, it said I. Hillard 1 yard gain and ball tranferring possession to Carolina.

Now it says...
2nd-10, Miami 26
J. Delhomme incomplete pass down the middle

7. Just by looking at the numbers why didn't Carolina run the ball more?
182 rush yards off of 21 attempts but 201 pass yards off of 42 pass attempts. I know Delhomme had to pass a lot in the last few minutes but still...

9. I was following it on the internet also...
....but I think Carolina had one long run of 50 yards in the 3rd quarter which may have skewed the running stats.

10. Without the 50 yard run it's 7.2 YPC still impressive
Anyways :toast: to your team Miami

12. My math was off
182 off of 27 carries is 6.7 ypc, 132 off of 26 carries is 5.1 ypc. I also previous under counted their runs. I misread the box score the first time. Seems Carolina had good balance.

14. Now that was a moronic coaching decision by Sparano
Failing to attempt the FG was bizarre ignorance. The FG was by far the better choice in terms of probability. Naturally the NFL Network announcers were clueless and adopted the conventional fear-based wisdom that the FG attempt was, "too risky."

It's unbelievable what passes for proper strategy in the NFL. A FG wraps up the game. Your kicker is 16 of 17 for the season. If you miss they get it at the 35 instead of the 27, where they took over after the failed 4th down attempt.

It's not even close. Sparano has made a series of bonehead maneuvers, including going for 2 while up by 11. This one may have been the worst. If I weren't a Dolphin fan I would have rooted for the stupid team to be burned. And it nearly happened, with Carolina throwing into the end zone at game's end.

Handing the ball to the other team with 45 seconds remaining and down by only 7 was significantly more risky than the extremely low percentage of a disastrous play on a FG attempt. It's not parallel to the New England decision at all because Miami on 4th and 3 is an underdog to make the first down, particularly given the obvious play choice of a hand off to a backup RB like Hilliard.

Regardless, it was an inspired effort. When Ted Ginn is making tough catches and Davone Bess manages more than 5 yards on a punt return, then it's obviously your day. I just hate inept application of probability.

15. I was wondering about that
Edited on Thu Nov-19-09 11:59 PM by JonLP24
I saw 4th & 3 Carolina 27......... I was expecting a FG(following online)

Then next thing I see is
I. Hillard 1 yard gain Carolina possession.

I was scratching my head over that one but since I didn't see it on the TV I had no idea what to make of it.

18. Kicking a field goal would have been moranic!
I was expecting them to do anything but the field goal. I really thought either pooch kicking it or trying to catch carolina off balance with a pass would have been a better option.

Make them drive 90 yards and not 65.

Make a FG and you're up by 10. Game in the bag.

21. And have the field goal blocked and it makes Belicheck's choice
look downright fucking genius.

Yes. Going for the field goal at where they were would have been a moranic call!

23. Dan Carpernter is 6/6 from 40-49 yards
which is "where they were"

I'm not arguing going for it on 4th and 3 was a bad call.

I'm saying going for a field goal is not a moronic or moranic call. There are chances it won't work out but they are very small.

22. The whole offensive line was pretty much banged up..
Guy's were playing in new positions, etc...including the center. I think he should have pooched it.
