Victor Martinez must have taken the "Curse of Colavito" with him to Boston...
Edited on Sat Aug-08-09 08:25 PM by Auggie
Red Sox have one win and five losses since he joined the team. (On edit): Cleveland is 4-1 going into Saturday's game.

Wiki: "The Curse of Rocky Colavito is a phenomenon that supposedly prevents the Cleveland Indians baseball team from winning, be it the World Series, the American League pennant, reaching postseason play, or even getting into a pennant race. Its origin is traced back to the unpopular trade of right fielder Rocky Colavito for Harvey Kuenn in 1960. It is a classic example of an urban legend or a scapegoat for the Indians' past failures."

Hallelujah!!! Get that damn thing out of Cleveland.

1. I remember those guys--had their baseball card
Both were good, but Colavito had power and a cannon for an arm. I remember the trade but I had no idea there was a curse associated with it.

2. New England's bedeviled team 6W-9L since acquiring Martinez
Even more shocking, they dropped 7 games to the Yankees going from 1/2 game behind in the standings to 7 1/2 as of 8-17.

3. Funny how the Eastern New England DU'ers have gotten awfully quiet
about their team!

5. The Sox were showing signs of struggling well before Martinez arrived.
They've been wildly inconsistent all year (especially the bats), and the Ortiz thing seemed to drain whatever spark of life they had left (which didn't seem like much to me...the team hasn't looked hungry all year). It's not a curse, it's a lack of fire in the belly. It hasn't been there at all this year, for whatever reason.I think they rode their talent as far as that alone could take them, which was good for about half the season. But without the will to win and the hunger to win all the talent in the world won't save you, and that's what they Sox are finding out. And despite what's happened with Ortiz, no excuses, they just aren't getting it done.

And to be fair, with the way the Yankees have played for the last two months, I don't think anyone could keep up with them, even if the Sox had been playing better. My only real disappointment is that they didn't keep me interested until opening day in the NFL. The season is a failure to me. :)

6. I don't think its a fire issue
they play hard. They got old at some key spots. Catcher, DH, 3b. The injuries to their pitching hurt as well.

7. I don't know. Been watching them all year.
Outside of the early 12 game winning streak they've been pretty average, with only a couple come from behind wins late (where they usually rattle off quite a few during the year). There's been a couple dozen games where they look like they just can't wait to get home and go to bed or something. The mood has been different all year around this team, like they've never all gotten on the same page at once. And there's zero killer instinct this year as well....just ask the Orioles. :)
