Lincecum does it again...Giants down Phils 2-0
8 innings of shutout ball for Tim, picking up his 12th win and lowering his ERA to 2.18....back to back Cy Young awards?

Brian Wilson finished it off with his 27th save.

The Giants now have 14 shutouts, no other team in MLB is even in double figures.

3. Looks like chubby went 0-3 tonight
But I'll give him credit for drawing a walk.

So everyone had a good night tonight I take it?

5. Hey, that's why walks are a big deal
Good team statistic those guys that will take a walk instead of trying to swing for the fences on balls outside the zone.

A few Sac Flys and sac bunts work nicely as well.

I notice Pablo is starting to get himseld a few walks here and there. That's when you can start calling a guy a real ball player is when they start workin those. Have a night you can't get it done with the bat?

Work the count.

6. Generally that's true
one of the reasons the Giants have trouble scoring runs is because as a team they are last in MLB in walks...some of their younger players are way too aggressive.

However I don't know if that applies to Pablo. He's been compared to Vladimir Guerrero, a lot of his hits come on pitches out of the zone....why fool with success?

9. Guerro was known for good plate discipline
He didn't swing at pitches out of the zone to often.

Why change a guy's hitting tendencies if they have success hitting pitches out of the zone? Cause they wind up like Jeff Francoeur. That's why.

Another thing. You also wind up expanding the stike zone for the opposing pitcher. He's gonna get those close calls just off the plate. You kinda fuck it up for the guys hitting behind you. Pitcher goes up 0-2 on you he's gonna start workin those corners trying to expand that zone.

Lay off the stuff out of the zone you will wind up getting pitches to hit. Guerrero is a guy who's really good at that. You make a mistake and catch too much plate, good night.

Case in point? Watch Albert Pujols.

10. Stick to the Least coast. You don't know zilch about Guerrero
including how to spell his name. His reputation has always been that he swings at everything. He's very aggresive. He gets many many hits swinging out of the strike zone. That's waht makes him so dangerous. If he's changed his style this year and now only swings at strikes, that's news to me but I haven't sen too many Angels games.

13. Listen up cupless
Guerrero used to play out here. I know that a players past doesn't exist once they arrive in La La land.

His best year was 2002 in Montreal where he put up big numbers across the board. His lost two years he became a very mature hitter and was not a free swinger.

It's POSSIBLE that in Anaheim where he's played for last 5.5 seasons he might have changed his approach.

12. "a lot of his hits come on pitches out of the zone"
That sounds like a Caribbean player.

Does the name Clemente mean anything to any one?

The Alou brothers -- all three of them -- were like that, too.

14. Correction
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 09:30 AM by Upton
I see I've made a mistake....the Giants actually have 15 team shutouts, not 14 as I originally stated.... I don't want to cheat the best pitching staff in baseball. They also lead in ERA, CG, SO and just about every other pitching category known to man.

16. Lets compare them to the Marlins
Pitching ERA

Giants-3.48 (1st)
Marlins-4.21 (15th)

Hitting runs scored

Giants-409 (27th)
Marlins-474 (15th)

Fielding errors

Giants-51 (7th)
Marlins-67 (21st)

Attendance avg per game

Giants-34,851 (10th)
Marlins-18,303 (29th)

Hmm..looks to me like the Giants lead in 3 out of 4 categories. Even if you want to exclude attendance, something I'm sure you'd prefer to do, the Giants still lead in 2 out of 3. Plus, most importantly, the Giants being tied for the Wild Card lead the Marlins in the standings. Conclusion: the Giants are the superior team.

17. Yeah---the Marlins are last in payroll
and only a couple games behind your 14th ranked (payroll)team in the wild card race.

From a historical perspective... The Giants will do what they typically do and fold in September.

Ya see the difference douche... Is I don't make a post every fucking time the Marlins win---- I mean every God Dam time your insignificant team wins, you fucking act like you won the World Series---which we all know your "Frisco" Giants have never accomplished.

Now lean over, kiss the other douche and tell him I said hi.

21. Last in payroll because...
they're last in attendance...the connection is obvious.

Maybe if South Floridians invested more of their sports dollar on the Marlins instead of at the dog track, Florida wouldn't be competing with Pittsburgh for the dubious honor of the cheapest franchise in MLB.

and the team is perennial losers. I mean no World Championships for their long suffering fans is shameful.

24. I think the Marlins could have won a few WS this decade
If they kept Beckett and Willis.

I don't think it's so much the payroll but also the fact that they always seem to lose their good players. That's gonna drive down attendance.

It ain't so much the losing but that factor alone. H Ramirez is a really good player that they have and I am sure there are many fans waiting for the shoe to drop and the team to trade him at some point. The Merlins start showing some committment to these guys and the fans will start filling up the ball park.

Nope---I'll take the clean house strategy any day over teams that have high priced payrolls.

If the marlins Payroll went up 20 mill to keep Beckett and extend Ramirez would you really care?

I bet you'd being doing backflips over such an idea.

29. I agree with that when it is needed
But I also don't think when you clean house you include a pitcher like Beckett. If the Marlins had Beckett this season I think you could pretty much pencil them in as division winners.

Wouldn't you?

They're only 5 back with the folks they got for Beckett.

Look---Their philosophy seems to work fine the last 15 years... Two World Series... not bad--- oh--- and that's the same as the high priced Red Sox's.

20. I have to admit the guy is awesome
Cain, too, has really turned things around after his uneven year last season. But you can't win consistently without hitting. Scoring 2 runs isn't gonna cut it most of the time. I've noticed a big difference in the Giants' play at home and on the road. Unless they can start winning consistently, they aren't going to the playoffs. My money is still on Colorado (and you know the Braves and Marlins still have a shot).
