| Regarding Evolution, Time, and Money |
|
Thinking about how Religious types talk about the age of the Earth and evolution (especially when they talk about how there really hasn't been any evolution lately ... a process that takes place radically only over extremely long periods of time, not just a couple of hundred years ...)
I'm reminded of an old joke (maybe a song?) ...
A man asks God, "What is a million years to you?"
God answers, "A second."
The man then asks, "What is a million dollars to you?"
God answers, "A penny."
The man pauses for a minute, and then asks, "God, may I have a penny?"
God answers, "Sure ... in a second ..."
So, if a million years, to God, is a second, then what was God doing all those millions and billions of years before the 15 or so thousands of years before "creating the Heavens and the Earth"?

This is a question that none other than Stephen Hawking is trying to answer, only he posits it a litle diffrently. What existed before the big bang? Now that's a tough one to answer since all the laws of physics as we know them cease to operate the closer to the big bang in time you get since space-time- matter are undifferentiated. So if the tools we use to think about physics cease to operate how do we even manage to think about it in a scientific way?
