2. I like it here.. seriously
I do consider myself Shinto Buddhist, though its of background more then something I practice on a daily basis. I am more intersted in Shintoism and love exploring it as deeply as possible. Perhaps its why I have been posting the Japanese Folk Tales..every time I read one and post it, I gain a little more respect for my ancestors and their attitudes towards life.

4. Meh. It does serve the useful function...
..of limiting, to some extent, the endless, dreary Catholic-bashing elsewhere.

Like Voltaire hasn't been dead these two-hundred-plus years, Tom Paine was never born, and that's all still an edgy, transgressive and dangerous place to go...

6. So are you saying
that since Voltaire and Paine, the church has been a bastion of awesomeness?

7. No, but you don't get any radical cred...
...from beating up on it any more. Not since 1870 or so...

It's like attacking chattel slavery, or advocating for women's suffrage.

9. Perhaps people 'beat up' on the Catholic church because they genuinely want it to change, then
Accusing it of immorality over covering up child rape, for instance, is nothing like "attacking chattel slavery, or advocating for women's suffrage", because it's a current problem that the church has still not fixed.

10. Wait a minute - slavery and women's suffrage changed.
The Catholic Church on the other hand has applied a bit of pointless window dressing and carried on as before.

FWIW I consider Catholicism from the POV of adherent lunacy quite low on the totem pole - its hierarchy on the other hand is pretty close to the top of the hypocritical venality scale.

Nice buildings though.

12. It really depends.
I take civil rights seriously. I take equality seriously. I take religious bigotry seriously.

But most of the stuff in this forum you just can't take seriously.

13. Interesting to watch
when it doesn't devolve into a personal scrum between two old advasaries.

Sometimes thought provoking, occasionally inspirational, but most of the time it looks like this:
