Priest Accused Of Shoplifting Butter, Sofa Cover

WEST CITY, Ill. (AP) ―

A Roman Catholic priest was accused of shoplifting butter and a sofa cover at a Wal-Mart in southern Illinois. Police arrested 41-year-old the Rev. Steven Poole on Friday. He's charged with two felony theft counts. Investigators said Poole failed to scan a $3.22 container of butter and a $60 sofa cover at a self-checkout. Poole then allegedly went to the store's bedding section, picked up a memory foam mattress and switched the pricing bar code. That caused the $145 item to be scanned for $31.

Allegedly, Poole also possessed a stolen laptop computer power pack.

He's the priest for St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Christopher and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sesser.

Poole does not have a listed home telephone number, and messages left for him at the churches were not returned.

5. He should get 6 months just for the $3.22 pack of butter
or at least be sentenced to community service where he can get a little experience actually doing some real work for a change.

7. When one is caught redhanded, "stealing in the name of the Lord...."
...clearly a plea-bargain is in order. Because Jebus says:

"Matthew 5:25-26 "Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing."

- You can say what you want about him, but that Jebus knew how to negotiate a sentence down.....

K&R

"Sounds good to me...."

8. You're distorting the issue!!!
This happened because of Wal-Mart's policies!
Where are the articles showing the other side for context?
Stop ignoring history to promote your ideology!
Why don't you give the whole story instead of the small facts that support your case?
Wal-Mart has stolen more from the American people!
But what about all of the Catholic charities? Why don't you mention them?
The world would be much poorer if not for the art funded by the Catholic Church!
Stalin and Mao killed tens of millions!
Illinois was controlled by the French until 1763. How convenient of you to leave that little detail out.
The Black Death killed as much as 60% of Europe's population in the 14th century.
People steal things in other states too, you know.
You just hate Christians!
Stop persecuting my beliefs!

9. He's not a real Christian.
I'm sick of all the Catholic bashing.
So you're saying that non-believers don't steal?
Fundamentalists are all the same--atheists included.

10. How can you say he's not a real christian?
after all aren't we supposed to be sinful by nature due to original sin. His just happened to be shoplifting it makes a change from the more spectacular human hailings of the clergy. In fact it's so mild I find it amusing rather than horrifying. You may be throwing out a decent human being and/or a committed christian by declaring him an infidel for a bit of butter and a sofa cover. Turn the other cheek and don't throw the first stone. And never use the "No true Scotsman" fallacy again

13. I think you missed the point of my post
laconicsax posted a bunch of the normal everyday canards that get posted. I just chimed in with a few that were missed. Clearly I've been absent from R/T too much.
