Z: A thinly fictionalized account of how democracy was destroyed in Greece
Although it was filmed in Algeria with a cast of mostly French actors, everyone knew that the 1969 film Z was really about the military coup that occurred in Greece in the mid 1960s.

This film starts a bit slowly, but it quickly gains momentum as the Greek equivalent of freepers are enlisted to disrupt leftist rallies, beat up dissidents, and plant stories in the press. When an opposition politician meets with an "accident," a tabloid photographer and a judge try to find the truth.

2. Ditto!
I saw it back when it was current. It was a tough movie to get into but it was great by the end.

I loved it and remember it as one of the best movies I've seen.

3. I also saw it back in the days, but it's especially current now
The right-wingers may be raving about "Communists," but otherwise, they are remarkably similar to present-day right-wingers.

4. Watch The Parallax View
it's a thinly-disguised story about a guy (Warren Beatty) investigating why people who were in a photo of an assassination (a RFK-style assassination) keep getting killed off.

the part where Parallax shows their "training" film is really, really creepy and very well done. it's a lesson in montage. a creepy one.

I saw it via iTunes.

5. I remember that--I'll have to put it into my Netflix queue
For another creepy conspiracy film, try Three Days of the Condor, which involves the CIA and oil.
