Blue Highways, Wm Least Heat Moon
It was recommended to me for travel, but my interest is motorcycle travel, and here he is in a van.
Plus, he uses maybe a stream of consciousness approach that I got lost on, AND the print is way too small.
So I had to give up.
He also has a boat travel book, which I may try later, and another book out on the new book shelf at this time.
So I guess somebody likes him. Why?
Tnx

1. that is one of my favorite books of all time.
my copy is beat up, pages are taped, etc.

I can't really tell you why, perhaps it was just that part of my life when I first read it, but I have read it over and over again, and always found a new line to chuckle at.

I hope you find your muse.

2. I've only read one book of his: Prairy Erth. It's on my permanent bookshelf.

8. I agree, I've read all three and like that one the best.
A good lesson, too: taking the time to really know one spot is just as if not more interesting and engaging than traveling to many spots.

3. Hi, David13. I don't want to pick a fight, but I loved this book
start to finish.

It included quotations like this one:

- - -

“With a nearly desperate sense of isolation and a growing suspicion that I lived in an alien land, I took to the open road in search of places where change did not mean ruin and where time and men and deeds connected.”

--William Least Heat Moon, Blue Highways

4. I love that book.
I found it interesting because he traveled so many of the same roads that I have. It was a beautiful piece of writing.

5. I like the wall calendar/diner rating rules
plus Dime Box Texas and all the other great town names. He has done great train travel books too.

6. It's a refreshing and insightful re-connection with the myth of
the journey.

I'd recommend it to anyone who ever had a touch of wanderlust.

7. The boat book is "River Horse".
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 03:41 PM by eppur_se_muova
It includes occasional little gems of conversation, but if you didn't get much out of Blue Highways, I doubt River Horse will appeal to you either.

Personally, I've enjoyed his books (especially PrairyErth, even though the mystic parts didn't do anything for me) and am looking forward to reading Journey to Quoz.
