The GOP is scared
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 09:43 PM by AnIndependentTexan
http://www.northcountynews.com/view.asp?s=11-24-04/news5.htm

White House spokeswoman told North County News last Friday that citizens should embrace the Election Day results and dismiss recount efforts in Ohio that could hand Democratic Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts the presidency.

"The election has ended, and now is the time for the country to come together to address the challenges our nation faces," the spokeswoman, Suzy DeFrancis, remarked.

41. No, when "We the people" say it is
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 11:45 PM by MarkusQ
This isn't just the Democrats fight. There are a lot of Republicans (including me) who think this whole thing stinks to high heaven and want it fixed. No, I'm not thrilled about having Kerry as my president, but I'd far rather an honest man I disagree with right down the line than a cheating crook that will say or do anything to get elected, even if he does claim to be a Republican.

News Flash: "Fraud" is not one of the "Moral Values" I was raised to respect, any more than "bald faced lying", "fear mongering", "shooting first", or "spending other people's money like a drunken sailor".

That man has a hell of a lot of nerve calling himself a conservative.

Even if the Democrats decide to drop it, there are a lot of Republicans who are sick of having our good name dragged through the mud by him, and we aren't about to drop it till he's stopped.

46. Yes, but you know what I mean
It's the Dems whose butts are really on the line. It's their fight this time, because John Kerry is our candidate and many of us believe, with good reason, he won.

Some say what really matters is repairing the process so the next election is trustworthy. Some say it doesn't matter if the election turns around or not, and I say it does. We didn't think it mattered enough to fight in 2000, and look what happened. We are almost as culpable for being lulled into thinking "just another politician" when bush became the squatter in the Oval Office.

Along the lines of what you posted, a very good friend of mine is a Repub and she despises bush and what he has done to the Republican name.

I know I sound a little combative about Kerry's right to the White House, but I assure you it's not personal (except when it comes to trolling freepers).

Welcome to DU.

The reason Gore lost in 2000 was (IMHO) that Rove & his gang of thugs was able to cast the issue in terms of "Democrats want Gore to win" (which made the whole thing about sour grapes). From that point on, it was doomed because half the country was against you from the start.

With Kerry sitting out the early rounds, there is a chance to get the focus on the fact that Americans of all flavors want their votes counted accurately. It isn't about getting Kerry in to office, it's about the integrity of the process. Stated that way, I think you'll find that the majority of the Republicans will be behind it instead of against you.

I know I sound a little combative about Kerry's right to the White House, but I assure you it's not personal (except when it comes to trolling freepers).

I know it isn't personal, and I don't take it that way. But it also isn't productive. That path was tried in 2000, and we see where it leads. This isn't about anybody's right to the whitehouse, it's about every American's right to honest elections.

to hear from a republican who sounds like my father's and grandfather's republicanism.

i don't remember them being anything like republicans nowadays -- with their evangelical fervor. the patriarchs of my family would have hated where the party is now.

(yuk -- i don't want this to sound condescending, like "reasoned, for a republican." i think i'm trying to say political differences used to about policy and ideas. now, if someone is on the other side, they are evil.

97. Don't sound so surprised.
There are a lot of Republicans/true Conservatives lurking here.

I, myself, voted Republican many times. It just became too much. They did nothing other than protect the uber rich.

Personally, I'm very conservative regarding fiscal and foreign policy, but EXTREMELY liberal on just about everything else. Now, when I say conservative on foreign policy, I don't mean warmongering. I think we have to protect our interests, that just doesn't mean we can beat the shit out of someone because we want what they have.

Anyway, my wife and I, after seeing how the Repubs acted between 2000-2002, proudly voted a straight Dem ticket, both in 2002 and this year.

Don't be surprised. There are a lot more of us out there than you know.

Note: I don't think I've ever said I was a former Republican, even on all the threads over the years (I've been here since pretty much the beginning) asking for former Repubs.

Note 2: My dad, a life long Republican, almost voted for Kerry. He had a problem with the UN, though. However, he basically can't stand Shrub.

Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 02:43 PM by nashville_brook
my husband is a software developer and his colleagues are mostly fiscal republicans like yourself. one guy assumed my hubby was also an 'R' b/c he drives german cars, smokes cigars and brews beer. "you can't be a DEMOCRAT! you drive a BMW" major 'ewwwwwww' moment.

in the early days of the campaign the R's were affecting that NFL-like "our guy's gonna beat you guy" attitude. nothing wrong with that -- elections are *my* favorite sport, too. they would have fevered political debates. good times.

after the first debate a number of the R computer engineers confided in my husband that bush scared the living hell out of them. of the ones swayed, they were swayed b/c of either what bush said or how he said it.

i'm not applauding the fact that bush blanked the evening -- rather, i'm thrilled to know that it's not an US/THEM proposition for us normal, non-media humans. it's not dogma for everyone. that means there's hope.

peace out -- b

The moral majority, the voter suppression, stomping on the basic principles of the Republican party are puke.

79. Gore had the sense to hold off concession, why not Kerry?
By conceding, Kerry lost interest of MSM and the public.
OTOH if he had held off conceding, there was infinitely
better chance of the powers to be getting involved in
investigations of fraud etc. It seems now we have only some
fringe reporters and obscure media paying attention. The
MSM has unfortunately moved on as they say.

80. Perhaps his concession was a Trojan Horse
I would give anything to know if the Dems have involved David Boies. I saw him make a couple of television appearances the week before the election. He also put his book out about a week before the election. The last chapter was about Bush v. Gore, and some of the advice and commentary has been invaluable in this 2004 controversy.

Here's the problem with those at this site trying to persuade the majority the Dems simply lost. The Republicans ran the dirtiest campaign in our election history. Following this, the Republicans ran a whistleclean election. Thinking such as this is totally illogical. That's why regardless of the outcome of this controversy I will never believe this election was not highjacked. It would be "out of character" for the Republicans not to have pulled shady maneuvers. If they follow their past pattern, they will point a finger at the Dems and accuse them of the actions they, the Republicans perpetrated. They are beyond corrupt.

86. I think just the opposite--
in my opinion, the last person to come forward should be John Kerry. He of all people can't risk losing credibility if he hopes to take the White House in January. He can't be seen as scheming to steal the election--even though we know he wouldn't ever do that. It has to come from all of the rest of us. Jesse Jackson and others should be able to attract enough media, when they are ready for it.

I will never forget how that mob was able to stop the recount in that one county..When i see reports and pics of them in Ohio causing trouble then i will know they are scared.. But you are right the more they tell us to move on means they don't like we are doing or might find..

the whole repub angle is just in the intro -- the rest of the piece is actaully a fairly decent inventory of our efforts as the tin foil hat gang (without the tin foil hat part).

maybe the message here isn't that the GOP is scared, maybe the media is waking up. in a grassroots way. this is a smallish paper ( i didn't check to see if was gannett) reporting on the work that is coming out of the blogosphere and alernative weeklies. the writer was clever to get the white house to remark on the issue. this is a good media contact.

13. Reminds me of when I was eight years old, and an older kid
wanted a padlock I had (no key, typical kid treasure) and he promised to give me a battery for it the next day if I would trade. So I gave him the lock.

When I saw him the next day, I said, okay, where's the battery you owe me?

And he looked at me and said, that was yesterday!

And the R's are saying, sure we took your votes and counted them back in our own treehouse and had to throw some of them out, and lost some of them, and decided that we won, but that was yesterday! Get over it!

But the election doesn't end with the voting; it's a whole process.

And it wasn't yesterday. It's now.

21. Here's my corny story. ;)
When I was about that age, I had a friend who was tormented by older bullies.

After dealing with the fallout for months, his mother enrolled him in karate classes. When she was sure that he could fight, she took him from house to house, calling the bullies out to fight.

In most cases - after finding out what their little devils were up to - the parents administered justice on the spot.

In one case, a bully's father forced him to fight. He got his butt kicked. It was beautiful. Savage, but beautiful.

It's now, it's definitely now and it's not going away! Not this time. This time we will not go quietly. I WILL NOT "get over it." I'm still not over the 1st hijacking of 2000. I WILL stand my ground and I won't back down. It's not yesterday, it's now.

Close look at the vote should spotlight flaws

Sunday, November 28, 2004

-snip-
"Since Kerry's loss, a small but vocal group of conspiracy theorists has been hard at work trying to prove that some dark forces on Election Day somehow handed votes to Bush while keeping them from Kerry. "

-snip-
"Now comes news that the investigative arm of Congress will take a look at the election as a whole - and at some allegations of irregularities specifically. The Government Accountability Office has announced that it will undertake an investigation of the Nov. 2 vote. "

"They will doubtless find some problems. No one is claiming that the vote was perfect. The GAO's findings should be heeded and used to make improvements in future votes. "

"If only the conspiracy theorists would listen, too. "

53. Geez, it's that "NO ELECTION IS PERFECT" argument again
They sure do get a sound-byte and run with it eh? Just repeat what Rumsfeld and Rice say, "no election is perfect"...we should uncover flaws in the election process while investigating BUT WE SHOULD DO NOTHING ABOUT THEM! Use the info for future elections, RIGHT - LIKE WE DID THIS TIME, that is, use the info collected from 2000 to improve this election. I am not buying this future election garbage. I am not moving on. I am not going to "get over it." This issue will not just go away and fade into the corruption. Sorry Republicans, your party has been infiltrated by parasites and they are destroying the host, getting bigger by the minute. They must be stopped for the sake of America! :grr:

55. Dear Suzy DeFrancis:
You seem to have missed the degree to which the country came together *before* the election, and now, of course, you want us to ignore the results of the work of hundreds of thousands of concerned, informed Americans. Ain't gonna happen. More than half the country is not gonna let it happen. And you seem to be unaware that more than half the country views the presence of George Bush in the White House as THE greatest challenge the nation faces. But don't worry, help is on the way. And have a nice day!

The evidence is mounting. The dam is leaking. Rise up. Shout it out. One of Shakespeare's characters said, "Tell the truth and shame the Devil." I like that. I think it applies to the current events. It's better to live without lying.

109. Interesting analogy...
What a coinky-dink. I just posted this on "What Did You Learn" thread. I think it warrants a repeat here.

http://mathewgross.com/blog/archives/001041.html

"

Watch Dan Rather apologize for not getting his facts straight, humiliated before the eyes of America, voluntarily undermining his credibility and career of over thirty years. Observe Donna Brazille squirm as she is ridiculed by Bay Buchanan, and pronounced irrelevant and nearly non-existent. Listen as Donna and Nancy Pelosi and Senator Charles Schumer take to the airwaves saying that they have to go back to the drawing board and learn from their mistakes and try to be better, more likable, more appealing, have a stronger message, speak to morality. Watch them awkwardly quote the bible, trying to speak the new language of America. Surf the blogs, and read the comments of dismayed, discombobulated, confused individuals trying to figure out what they did wrong. Hear the cacophony of voices, crying out, “Why did they beat me?”

And then ask anyone who has ever worked in a domestic violence shelter if they have heard this before.

They will tell you, every single day.

The answer is quite simple. They beat us because they are abusers."

110. Judge to rule Tuesday on part of challenge to Bush victory in Nevada
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2004/11/29/state1956EST0121.DTL

Judge to rule Tuesday on part of challenge to Bush victory in Nevada

SCOTT SONNER, Associated Press Writer
Monday, November 29, 2004

-snip-
A judge intends to decide Tuesday whether to allow a legal
challenge to move forward aimed at blocking Nevada's five
electoral votes from being cast next month for President
Bush.

Washoe County District Judge Peter Breen said Monday he's
considering setting an evidentiary hearing to determine
whether there are grounds to keep the votes from Bush -- who
carried Nevada by 21,500 votes -- due to allegations of voter
registration fraud and claims some voting machines
malfunctioned.

-snip-
"President Bush is claiming he has a mandate and included in
that is that the state of Nevada stood behind him. Even if
Nevada's five electoral votes will not change the election, it
does have an impact on whether Nevada is part of that
mandate," Dickerson said.

`If there are disenfranchised voters who were illegally
disenfranchised ... then those voters are not having their
will voiced," he said.
