FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WESTPORT – November 21, 2004: Recount The Votes, a group of non- partisan voters from Fairfield, Westport, Redding, Bridgeport and other towns in lower Fairfield County, met on Thursday, November 18th at the Westport Public Library to discuss their concern about the integrity of the recent vote. Reports coming out of Ohio and Florida, as well as several other states, have confirmed irregularities in the registration process, election day malfunctions, and the totaling of votes at precinct, county and state levels.
Many Fairfield County residents have expressed concern that mainstream media have done little to cover the issues of voting irregularities and the question of recounts in critical swing-states, such as Ohio. A spokesperson for the group noted that most Fairfield County residents are not aware that requests for recounts have already been submitted in Ohio and New Hampshire.
The Internet has provided an effective medium for rapidly communicating these issues, and a number of petitions have been circulating urging Congress to authorize a recount and groups such as the Green and Libertarian parties have raised funds to support a recount. In the absence of coverage in local and national media, Recount the Votes is committed to providing Fairfield County residents with timely and accurate information about voter irregularities and the status of any recounts.
In addition to anecdotal reports of irregularities with voting machines, experts from the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania, and John Hopkins University have all examined the election results. They are in agreement that the final election results in key states were statistically improbable.
The most comprehensive report to date comes from the University of California, Berkeley, where graduate students did a research project under the direction of a professor and " … found intriguing evidence that electronic-voting counties Florida] could have mistakenly awarded up to 260,000 votes to President Bush." Further on the report states: "… the UC Berkeley team found that Bush received tens of thousands more votes in electronic-voting Democratic counties than past voting patterns would have suggested. No such pattern turned up in counties using optical scanning machines."
On Saturday, November 20th, Recount The Votes held a rally at the Saugatuck River bridge in Westport to heighten local awareness about irregularities and recounts. A representative of the group announced that more events are planned in the coming weeks.
Recount the Votes is one of many grassroots organizations forming nationwide to support efforts to ensure fair and transparent elections. It is a non-partisan group, whose members belong to the Republican, Democratic, Green and other parties.
