Cybernet is all the same company? I need Du'er research help
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 07:25 PM by AnIndependentTexan
I'm not going to say for sure yet, but we have reason to believe that. I want to research it first before anything is said for sure or proven. I want everyone to be rational and careful on this.

Cybernet's website at http://www.cybernet.com/ shows that it is located at
Cybernet Systems Corporation
727 Airport Blvd.
Ann Arbor, MI 48108-1639 USA

Their website even warns:
"PLEASE NOTE!
We're Cybernet Systems -- not Cybernet Ventures, Cyber.Net, Cybernet Manufacturing, or any of a dozen companies with the name "Cybernet" somewhere in them. If you're not sure if we're the right Cybernet, please check our handy "Which Cybernet?" guide before writing. It might save you some time and trouble!"

4. CyberNET ...here we go again
I was also suspicious that the Grand Rapids Cybernet might be one and the same with some of the others we were finding. Both Cyberco and Diebold are mentioned in a Michigan government "List of Vendor Exemptions, Suppliers & Exemptions (11/05/2004 02:02 PM)", as (it appears to me anyway) being a supplier to Greektown casino, which is in Detroit, but Greektown also has what seems to be a pretty extensive online gambling business, too:

Vendor Registration Short Form ($600 - $49,999)
CYBERCO HOLDINGS INC (d/b/a CynerNet Engineering) - Grand Rapids, MI 49503 - (#25-002815-2004) (Greektown Casino, L.L.C.)

Vendor Registration Application (over $50,000)
DIEBOLD, INCORPORATED - North Canton, OH 44720 - (#25-001583-2002) (Greektown Casino, L.L.C.)

Not sure what this is...found a BUNCH of virus alerts that had the name CyberNET in them...

Subject: WARNING - VIRUS ALERT No.36
Date: Saturday, 20 Nov 1999 18:58:00 GMT
W97M/Prilissa is a new Melissa variant. AVERT has assigned it a risk assessment of MEDIUM?ON WATCH. There has been a serious outbreak in Europe, and it is expected to travel quickly.
W97M/Prilissa infects Word 97 files. It propagates itself by creating an MS Outlook email with the subject line "Message From (Word 97 username)" and the message text: "This document is very Important and you've GOT to read this !!!"
It sends this message, with an attached copy of the infected Word 97 file, to the first 50 entries in any address book it finds. It does this only once.
W97M/Prilissa includes a destructive payload! If the date is December 25 of any year, it will modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the next time the computer is booted, the hard drive will be formatted, causing a loss of all data. In addition, the following message will be displayed in Word 97:
"(C) 1999 - CyberNET
Vine... Vide... Vice... Moslem Power Never End...
You Dare Rise Against Me... The Human Era is
Over, The CyberNET Era Has Come!!!
"
Note: If you are using McAfee Clinic , you should get the update.

already know something about that virus that carries the infected Word 97 attachment? Maybe its origin info is already known.

Here is a bit on how "New Century Technologies Corporation" became CyberNET-- namely, while still in Utah, they acquired the German company named CyberNET. So, although it is listed legally as a foreign profit corporation in the Michigan State records, it obtained this status through acquisition and merger in 1997:

News Release
Thursday 17 April 1997, 16:57 GMT Thursday 17 April 1997
BUSINESS
New Century Technologies

NEW CENTURY TECHNOLOGIES SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT FOR THE ACQUISITION OF CYBERNET AG

Salt Lake City, Utah, April 17 - New Century Technologies Corp. ("The Company") is pleased to announce that it has signed a letter of intent for the acquisition of 100% of the issued and outstanding stock of CYBERNET AG, a private German corporation ("CYBERNET") which is a leading business Internet provider headquartered in Munich, Germany.

11. look at the whois records for these sites
go to http://whois.sc and type in the domain name. it'll tell you who the site is registered to.

from doing this it looks like these are different companies - i can't see a link between them. the cybernet that was raided by the FBI is:

http://www.cybernetgroup.com -> http://whois.sc/cybernetgroup.com
http://www.cybernet-usa.com -> http://whois.sc/cybernet-usa.com

Registrant:
 CyberNET Engineering
 25 S Division Ave
 Grand Rapids, MI 49503
 US
 616-913-9000

registered under the same address are:

http://www.halcyonsoft.com -> http://whois.sc/halcyonsoft.com
http://www.stryon.com -> http://whois.sc/stryon.com

=================================================

different cybernets:

http://www.cybernet.com - registered in Ann Arbor, MI
http://www.cybernetmedical.com - same

http://www.cybernet-co.com - registered in Tehran

the fact that these are registered under different addresses and hosted on totally different servers by different hosting companies does not necessarily mean there's no connection between them and the cybernet that was raided, but i can't see any connection and would have thought if they wanted to keep their connection secret they wouldn't all call themselves cybernet.

13. Following pk_du's link a bit further, there's an article

with this information, among other:

“Cyberco does business as CyberNET Engineering and CyberNET Group. It sells high-tech services, including data storage and computer security.
1. Separately, on Wednesday, federal agents armed with a search warrant swarmed the company's Grand Rapids offices and seized records as part of a fraud investigation. The Ada home of Cyberco executives Barton Watson and wife, Krista Kotlarz-Watson, also was searched”

16. I think
that is why my data from the Michigan archives suggests also. I merely hesitated to interpret it because I don't really understand what I'm looking at here. But I think you are right. Of course, can one be a subsidiary of the other and they still be registered seperately? Or is that against the law?

17. there's not much law on the web
anyone can register any website with any registration address (you're supposed to use a valid address, but it's easy not to). i don't know anything about american company laws, it's just i've seen loads of people put time into researching the wrong cybernets - the one that was raided in the one you have there based in grand rapids, MI whose website is http://www.cybernetgroup.com - and you can see from the website it's a serious company, whereas the other cybernets have crappy pathetic websites. i think the reason why there are so many with the same name is if you're setting up an internet company but you don't know what to call it and you don't have much imagination then putting together the words "cyber" and "net" might seem like a brilliant idea.

from this web site: http://www.mlive.com/news/muchronicle/index.ssf?/base/news-3/110079456740490.xml

comes this info:

The U.S. Attorney General's office coordinated the execution of a pair of search warrants with officials from the FBI, IRS and U.S. Postal Inspector's office at CyberNET's headquarters at 25 S. Division.

These are the same companies we’re talking about here I think.

21. CyberNet overkill?
Could someone please state the connection of the CyberNet to Fisher because the original email that linked the two really didn't say. Only that CyberNet had been raided by the FBI. Just because a company has been raided by the FBI doesn't mean it is connected. And to say CyberNet was linked to Diebold does not mean much if the two names appear on the same web page. Diebold probably has vending machines that have Coke cans but that does not mean Coke and Diebold are in bed together. What possible service did CyberNet perform?

Also, I've never seen anything linking Blass to CyberNet other than both have links to Michigan. Blass got his PhD in Ann Arbor, but that doesn't seem like much of a link to me. I'm not saying that CyberNet is not important, perhaps it is, but many many other potential rewarding lines of investigation remain unexamined on Piotr Blass CV and this are definitely worth scrutinizing. I do not know what to make of the Fisher story but it does seem promising and Fisher has directly linked Blass to the whatever happened. Blass's CV is striking for several reasons. (1) It places him at BayPoint Schools in '03. (2) Why was Blass employed at Baypoint? It likely had to do with computers but it doesn't take someone of Blass's experience to network the school or run their computer lab. He was way way over qualified. Still that does not mean anything in and of itself since people often find themselves doing things that they are overqualified for. (3) Why did Blass's son become incarcerated in '04 at the very school at which Blass was once employed? (4) If his CV is genuine, then it is striking for several reasons. He went to undergraduate in Poland in the 70's and then went to graduate school at Harvard and the U. Michican. So, Blass apparently emerges from behind the Iron Curtain to receive postgraduate education in the US. He has published a number of academic articles. He has also worked for a number of companies and has a number of computer skills which may be relevent. Perhaps those companies and skills of Blass's are worth mining?

Another blog about the Fisher story made a big to do about Accenture. I do think that that link merits attention, definitely because of connections to voting lists in multiple states and (to a lesser degree Enron). The problem is that Accenture is a BIG company. It's like saying IBM or Microsoft. So, just because one can google Accenture and the name of another company doen't mean much in and of itself.
