Holy Scary!!!!!
Things are getting scary. When DU just went down I felt like my life support was cut off. Reality really hit hard. Then when I googled DU online and found those 100% articles about the notification to homeland security of those conveniently selected DU extremist quotes implying wanted harm for our troops, I thought holy crap, what if Homeland Security shuts us down one friggin day and robs us of our right to free speech on some Patriot Act Crap Technicality or something???

Let's Pray that will never happen. But it hit me tonight, we need each other, and I'm certain dozens and dozens of you felt as helpless as I did the last few hours. So if this was an attack, and a bigger one comes in the future, do we have a backup plan to keep in touch?

Please let me know.....

There would be too much of a backlash. Remember there are 50,000+ of us. heh, though come to think of it, the fact that there is 50,000+ is certianly a good reason to shut us down.....

64. Deadmessenger is right
Get Ad-Aware, but make sure to download the latest version (SE) and download the latest updates before you "scrub" your system. Also download and run Spybot S&D ver 1.3 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en). It's better to use more than one.

Sometimes AAW won't remove everything or it will hang during the deletion process. In that case boot to safe mode and run it again. I cleaned three "hosed" computers at work today using that method, which saved us from having to reinstall Windows.

32. Get Ad-Aware
Porn showing up at odd moments is a possible symptom of spyware infection. You might want to download Ad-Aware (it's free) and scan to see what's going on.

I'm in Paris and often lose track of the time difference. And a newby, so, wasn't too worried. My computer is always screwed up here. It didn't hit me until I logged in finally and saw everybody here was panicked. Look, let's leave the panicking to the right-wing. They have their 'be-prepared' infomercials out and are still stocking up on gas masks.

Besides, if they shut us down, we might have to actually get off our asses and revert back to the '60's style protests.

If hackers can get into the CIA computers, they can sure as hell take down the network of e-vote central. I NEVER liked the idea of computers getting a hold of my vote. I have no doubt in my mind that the CIA isn't already using hackers now on our emails and chat lines.

I am a Canadian who has been following your group for a few months now. I was amazed at how out of touch with reality many at freep seem to be. It doesn't seem to bother them that the integrity of the vote is at question. They also seem to feel that democrats are an uneducated bunch but judging by their discourse I don't think they would know an educated comment if they saw one. Best of luck with the recounts in Ohio and I hope New Hampshire lets loose a floodgate for voter reform. I really refuse to believe that most American's actually support *sh, he is doing incredible damage to your country.

"I really refuse to believe that most American's actually support *sh, he is doing incredible damage to your country."

I think that has most of us in shock too! Which makes it so important to have a voting system that we can believe in. At least if I knew for sure that this was how the majority of other American's felt then I could leave this country without regret, but to not have that confidence ... well then I have a duty to stay & fix it & get that confidence!

67. You know, THIS is a good reason to get to know your local DUers...
There are State and Country forums for the purpose of bringing us closer together.....USE THAT OPPORTUNITY!!!

When you know the other DUers in your area, that in itself is a "safety net", in case someday the bad guys really do try to put a stop to our freedom of speech. And any DUer who is or has been paying attention, knows that what I'm saying is not too far fetched.

Have meetings locally, just go have dinner or coffee or a beer with your fellow DUers. Look 'em in the eye. Get phone numbers. First of all, it's great fun, and makes you feel better. Second, you never know when it might be really necessary. "Underground" was once a "railroad". If history repeats itself, it could some day be one again.

Yeah, no chance we are getting hacked and no chance we should fear being disrupted for a meaningful period of time in the heat of this battle when things are starting to heat up. Yeah, no reason at all. Nahhhhh, the repubs don't want to disrupt us, we are just paranoid... They Just love what we are doing here.

72. another board
We have a board of Clark people that we kept going after Clark dropped out and it has been a good safe haven over the months when the Dean campaign ended, Kucinich etc. People are always welcome to use it as a back up if DU goes down, or if anyone wants to set up a private closed group we can do that for you as well.

http://www.thegeneralconversation.com/board/

Faster and better than Yahoo, no ads, etc.

75. Don't worry...i just want to say one thing then i'll get outta your way
I just wanted to explain...i stumbled in here by accident about a week ago...i wanted to help, and it took a while before i figured out how far outta my league it was ... so sorry i got your way ...but hey this is surreality central ....what is going down here is super scary for everyone the country lives now in two parallel universes, one that knows and one that is too afraid to know...so pass my apologies on to anyone who needs them and as always my thanks and utter awe at what you have accomplished. my job is to pillory the press...I will attempt to do my very best to slam them for not recognizing what you are doing...but for gods sake if they shut you down do not leave me behind i promise i won't get in the way anymore...maybe someone can help me go back and clean up some of the shit piles i left if we survive this... bigtime

81. DU has been up and down quite a lot since yesterday
I figure it was my wireless connection bujt it's been very difficult to get in here at certain times since yesterday... We need a backup plan and a back-up location. Maybe someone has an idea in case we get hacked to bits? Is someone making copies of some of the information that's been gathered here? I don't want to sound paranoid but I agree-- it is important that we protect what we know and stay in touch with each other somehow. Any ideas?
