...Because voters are voting on their own computers, there is of course a risk from compromise of those machines. The average user's computer isn't very well maintained and though estimates for the fraction of machines which are malware infected vary, it's clear that the numbers are large. It wouldn't be particularly hard to develop a piece of malware whose payload changed people's votes. There are several potential attack vectors here:

2. AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY!
Put the public back into the vote counting system!

Put THE LIGHT OF DAY back into the vote counting system!

What we have now--corporate run vote counting, using 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls (and in half the states, NO AUDIT AT ALL), with ONE COMPANY, with far rightwing connections that would make your hair stand on end, now MONOPOLIZING the system (ES&S, which just bought out Diebold)--is...

NUTS!
INSANE!
EGREGIOUSLY ANTI-DEMOCRATIC!
WRONG!
EVIL!
UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
ROVIAN!
SICK!
PERVERSE!
THE **NUMBER ONE** PROBLEM IN OUR COUNTRY!

and...

....still fixable, believe it or not, since control over voting systems still resides at the state/local level, where ordinary citizens and voters still have some potential influence--but it will take a BIG citizens movement to fix it.
