BREAKING: Butler County, Ohio BOE Website Declared 'Under Attack: - x

Source: Middletown Journal, WHIO TV

HAMILTON The Butler County Board of Elections website is under attack from an outside source, according to Board of Elections Director Betty McGary.

Although the "attack" is delaying communication of results on the board of election's website, McGary said it is not having an impact on actual ballot counting.

We do not think that anyone has hacked into our site, but we have crashed three servers. And in examining those servers, there are two unidentified sites that are deliberately diverting traffic.

McGary added: Our servers are under attack, we feel."

The board of elections' information technology department is still working on the issue, she said.

Our IT is saying this is being done deliberately, McGary said. This is definitely something of a concern for us, but the votes are safe.

4. Your votes are safe and there's nothing to be concerned about.
On the other hand, the system is being hacked and it is being done deliberately by somebody we haven't identified and the vote results are unclear.

US Treasury website hacked, then suspended...

A website of the US Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) was suspended Tuesday after it was hacked, a BEP spokeswoman said.

"The hosting company used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing had an intrusion and as a result of that intrusion, numerous websites (BEP and non-BEP) were affected," Claudia Dickens told AFP.

The Treasury Government Security Operations Center was made aware of the problem on Monday and subsequently notified BEP, she added.

She said the BEP website and four internet addresses (URLs) pointing to it -- BEP.gov, BEP.treas.gov, Moneyfactory.gov and Moneyfactory.com -- have been suspended until further notice.

As of late Tuesday, the websites were still inaccessible.

The hacking incidents were first reported by a blog of an AVG software vendor official, who said the attacking sites were traced to Ukraine.

Deliberate attack' on Butler elex website

The Butler County Board of Elections website was the target of a deliberate attack Tuesday night, Board of Elections Director Betty McGary said.

Our service is under attack. Were investigating and looking into it. Weve had three different servers crash, McGary said.

It appears right now with the info we have that there are two traffic sites that are directed at our Board of Elections web site. It appears to us that this is deliberate.

If we cannot block these two sites, we are tabulating but we are not able to literally produce the results.

The website went down with only absentee votes counted from the Tuesday primary. They made up only 2.85 percent of the total vote.

Website hacked, election officials say
The Butler County Sheriffs Office to decide if criminal acts were involved with disruption.

HAMILTON Local elections officials say their website was hacked as they tried to communicate the results of the Tuesday, May 4, primary election crashing the site several times and delaying the announcement of vote tallies.
We have crashed three servers, and in examining those servers, there are two unidentified sites that are deliberately diverting traffic, said Butler County Board of Elections Director Betty McGary as her frenzied staff struggled to post election results.
Our servers are under attack, we feel, McGary said, stressing that the problem pertained only to transmitting totals to the public, not accurately counting the votes.
This is definitely something of a concern for us, but the votes are safe, McGary said.
The (other Web) address had produced so many connections, it was so much traffic that our Web servers kept crashing, said Greg Sullivan, county information technology director, describing the act as a deliberate hack.
The Butler County Sheriffs Office was on hand, offering to aid in an investigation. Sheriffs Lt. Mike Craft said his office and elections officials will determine today if they believe the act was criminal.
