PROJECT VOTE NEWS CLIPPINGS FOR MAY 29
Project Vote's Election Media Clippings May 19, 2009
I. Project Vote
BLOG: Voting Rights Groups Score Victories Against Bad Legislation in Missouri and Florida - Voting Matters Blog As predicted, the historic gains made by African-American and other historically disenfranchised groups in the 2008 general election led to increased efforts by partisans in state legislatures across the country to erect new and stricter barriers to voting in 2009. Fortunately, harmful bills introduced this year in several key states ignited fierce backlash from voters, and catalyzed strong and organized opposition from voting rights advocates. In recent weeks coalitions of voting rights groups scored two major victories against voter suppression, killing efforts to pass restrictive election reform bills in both Missouri and Florida. http://www.projectvoteblog.org/265/?tx_ttnews =3305&tx_ttnews=263&cHash=a292b723a4
II. Voter ID House lawmakers consider voter ID bill for RI - Associated Press PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Voters in Rhode Island would have to show an identity card before getting a ballot under a bill that state lawmakers will consider. http://www.boston.com/news/local/rhode_island/articles/... /
III. Proof of Citizenship
EDITORIAL: Voting Rights Act still necessary in Georgia - Athens Banner-Herald …It's easy, and quite correct, for Handel and Perdue to make the argument that Georgia isn't the state it was in the 1960s and the decades before. But as Senate Bill 86 clearly demonstrates, neither of them can make the argument that Georgia won't slide toward implementing less obvious forms of minority voter suppression. http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/051109/opi_43842725...
IV. Election Day PRESS RELEASE: Justice Department to Monitor Election in Philadelphia - U.S. Dept. of Justice Justice Department staff members will monitor polling place activities in Philadelphia. A Civil Rights Division attorney will coordinate the federal activities and maintain contact with local election officials. In April 2007, the Justice Department reached a settlement agreement with Philadelphia related to allegations that the city had violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Help America Vote Act and the National Voter Registration Act. Philadelphia has an obligation to provide all election information, ballots and voting assistance information in Spanish according to Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act. The monitors will gather information concerning compliance with this requirement and other federal voting rights statutes. http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2009/May/09-crt-482.html
