My experience voting on Hart Intercivic
Edited on Sun May-10-09 09:05 AM by Melissa G
I went to vote in my very small city election. I first politely complained for the record that I had to vote on these unverifiable machines in the first place. I told the nice women there how much I appreciated their service, but that these unverifiable machines were junk and I was complaining for the record in case they were ever asked about complaints.

They politely heard what I had to say and gave me my access code. The first two numbers were redundant and the second digit only registered after I reset the dial. The enter key appeared to me to stick.

There was a up or down tax question and 3 unopposed city council seats. I voted for the tax proposal and for two of the council members. I purposefully did not vote for one candidate as a statement, even though of course, they all were going to win since they were all running unopposed. I went to my confirmation screen and had second thoughts about yet another candidate. I switched back screens and successfully seemed to have removed that second person's name, but then I changed my mind and put it back. When I went back to the confirmation screen it had switched back to being removed. I then went back and reentered my vote. The screen then registered it correctly. It could have been a sticky key or it could have been a stranger malfunction. $&#&#%&!!& machines! :grr:

Good thing that I remember to check and it was a short list. Longer lists that don't have party affiliation are so much harder to catch mistakes on!

1. What are you complaining about? It's a computer. Everyone knows they're unreliable.
:yoiks:

Well, I mean, they're unreliable if made by one of the vendors.

But if it's a computer like the one used last November by the Humboldt Opacity Project to "audit" :rofl: the election, that's OK.

OK? Good.

There will be a test in the morning.

2. well, maybe it's not really the fault of the computer on my vote.
Maybe it's just a sticky Enter Key... That doesn't count. :eyes: :sarcasm: So many places for things to go wrong.

3. Here's what I think:
I think the voting system (including any lever voting system, optical scanning voting system, or direct recording electronic system) shall—
(i) permit the voter to verify (in a private and independent manner) the votes selected by the voter on the ballot before the ballot is cast and counted;
(ii) provide the voter with the opportunity (in a private and independent manner) to change the ballot or correct any error before the ballot is cast and counted (including the opportunity to correct the error through the issuance of a replacement ballot if the voter was otherwise unable to change the ballot or correct any error)

(Section 301(a)(1)(A)(i) and (ii) of the Help America Vote Act (42 USC 15481))
