Programming glitch affects ballots statewide
Mistake made by vendor, commissioner says
A programming glitch is forcing election officials in Kanawha and 18 other counties to retest their optical scanning voting machines on the eve of the general election.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A programming glitch is forcing election officials in Kanawha and 18 other counties to retest their optical scanning voting machines on the eve of the general election.

Early voting begins Wednesday for the 2008 election. But Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick said a programming error in the state's automated voting machines could have resulted in incorrect results for at least one state race.

According to McCormick, voters who voted a straight Republican ticket but then decided to vote for only one Democrat in the state Supreme Court race would have had their votes incorrectly counted. Two Democrats and one Republican are vying for two open seats on the court.

A voter voting a straight Republican ticket who wanted to vote for both Democrats would have had their vote counted correctly, but someone who wanted to vote for only a single Democrat and no Republican would have votes recorded for both candidates, McCormick said.

1. Ok, will someone please tell me why they can't get several
rookie code-slammers to knock off a simple program here to fix this? This software merely tallies the votes. They don't have to program the Hubble Telescope or some super collider for god's sake.

4. Yeah it would have to be.
No other explanation seems plausible to me.

5. This also happend in another state!
Last week I heard that this happened in some other state - don't remember which one.

I think the moral to this story is NO ONE should be voting straight ticket this time.

Punch or mark the candidates individually!

6. Straight ticket
That is why I love old clunky machines here in NY. Push each little lever down and then when all the applicable levers are set, pull the big lever and the curtain opens. Gotta love it, no computer error here.

7. End the Madness
Transparent Ballot Box, for 500 - 800 Paper Ballots, with Deposit Trap and Counter
Easy to use, sturdy and stackable. Lockable with two individual locks. Deposit trap is operated using a lever which is coupled with the counter. Can be safely stored in the reusable protective box.

Get rid of the electronic ballot counting/smuggling machines, thats right, they use these machines to smuggle our paper ballots out of the neighborhood/polling place before we can Hand Count the ballots, PLAIN AND SIMPLE!

K&R
