NY Comes In Last Again (by putting democracy first)

NY Comes In Last Again

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

by Cara Matthews.

States around the country had spent 67 percent by the end of 2007 of the nearly $3 billion the federal government handed out to update voting systems, New York had only used up 7.43 of the $220 million it received. Thats a lower percentage than any other state. New Hampshire is No. 49, at 9.74 percent, although that state did not submit the required annual report to the U.S. Elections Assistance Commission.

New York is the last state in the nation to comply with the Help America Vote Act, which Congress passed to avoid a repeat of the vote-counting debacle in the 2000 presidential elections. The state is under federal court order to replace its 20,000 mechanical lever voting machines by fall 2009.

These are the financial details for New York:

$219.5 million received in HAVA funds;

$16.3 million spent;

$27.3 million earned in interest;

$230.5 million left in account.

Let NY pay back the Fed and keep it's levers.

1. I live in NY, and I like the levers
The election didn't get stolen here, the levers worked. It's the machines that can be screwed up. By the way their excuse about not giving out a receipt, that is blown out of the water by BofA and their deposit window. Your deposited checks give back a receipt with a picture of the check on it.

2. Prove that the elections were not stolen, use your Common sense, we all have it
but we ALL have to start using it, any mechanical/electronic voting machine that prevents us from counting our Paper Ballots (in the case of levers there are no paper ballots as with the electronic Dre's)

All of us have to use our Common sense, If there are machines that prevents us from having a paper ballot in the first place, like levers and DRE's those "machines have to be ELIMINATED.

You must have paper ballots, and those paper ballots must be Hand Counted before they are allowed to leave the window or in vote counting, before the paper ballots leave the neighborhood/polling place.

The bank does not want you to leave the window before you hand count you paper bills, WHY? BECAUSE IT MAKE SENSE.

7. I read something a long while back about the mechanics of lever machines
and while I'd prefer a paper trail, and *really* prefer paper ballots hand counted at the precinct level, with webcams watching, levers are much harder to rig, I understand, than DREs, certainly not on the massive scale that can happen with DREs.

Slightly off topic, I wish news sources would stop referring to all DREs as "touch screen" - makes our Hart eSlates with the knobs and buttons sound better, which they are *not*!

3. Can't have receipts because of Vote Selling.

It's prohibited under the NY State Constitution, unless the votes on the receipt are somehow known only to the voter.

4. When I start using MY COMMON SENSE.The different angles you guys use is comical
Hand Count any and all paper ballots BEFORE the paper ballots leave the neighborhood/polling place. If there are no paper ballots at the polling place to hand count, ASK YOURSELF, WHY?

Common Sense should kick in.

CARRY ON............
