Help! Trying to make sense of recounts. Nader, Cobb, Badernik, Allliance
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 01:12 PM by henslee
For Democracy, Help America Count and Blackboxvoting (who I thought was alligned with HAC but now I don't see them mentioned at the website)
Am I missing any?

I understand Nader's recount is a done deal (14 counties, link?) and that Cobb's and Badernik is almost a done deal (links?)

Question...

Are Cobb and Badernik, doing theirs separately and how come I have not seen contribution links to Badernik, specifically?

RE: Help Ameica Count. What are their recount priorites and what deadlines are they facing?

Same questions for Help America count and BBV.

If I am going to encourage people to donate, I am just trying to be educated.

1. Here's the donation page for Cobb/Badernik
http://web.greens.org/c/cobb/supporters.cgi?function=do...
"Your Help Needed for Ohio Recount!

David Cobb and Michael Badnarik, the 2004 presidential candidates for the Green and Libertarian parties, have announced their intentions to file a formal demand for a recount of the presidential ballots cast in Ohio.

The Cobb and Badnarik campaigns are in the process of raising the required fee, estimated at $113,600, for a complete recount in all 11,306 precincts in Ohio. We also need to raise money for other expenses involved with this effort; for example, our candidates and staff and communications systems and travel expenses also need to be paid.

Considering the grassroots support we have received from over 1500 donors in the first 48 hours hours, we are confident that we will raise enough for the recount filing fee plus other related expenses over the course of the next week. Funds donated to the Ohio recount are not subject to the contribution cap. Please be sure to include the words 'Ohio Recount' in the Notes section of our donate form.

The integrity of the democratic process is at stake; thank you for your support. "

ALSO, the Cobb/Badernik home page ( http://www.votecobb.org / )has more info on what they're doing. I donated this morning - someone here on DU said C/B need about $30,000 more to reach their funding goal.

2. Help America REcount was formed by DUers specifically to
fund the recount.

Donations directly to candidates can be used for anything (like retiring campaign debts), so MARK them FOR THE RECOUNT if you donate directly to any candidate.

Donations to BBV.ORG cannot legally go for funding the recount, altho Harris claims that what she plans to do in FL can be covered by donations to BBV.ORG.

For the NH Recount, Nader seems to be insisting that only donations directly to him will be used -- he doesn't (for whatever reason) want to take money from 527s or other groups.

Donations to Help America Recount will go specifically to fund recounts -- that's why it was set up by hedda_foil, long-time DUer and co-founder of the National Ballot Integrity Project.

Here's info (forgive me for not wanting to type it all up again):

4. According to their site, they are raising money for recounts, invest-
gations into voter irreg. and court challenges for Ohio and FLA. I am not sure if there is any redundancy regarding these recounts. Also not exactly sure what a fraud audit is, though it was explained somewehre.

when someone is able to help clarify how these various groups are more specifically being co-ordinated, and, what each groups roles and duties are, I may donate more.

Thanx again!

:-)

6. mzmolly did a pretty good clarification post I think the imp. question
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 03:12 PM by henslee
when donating is.... if you donate to a specific candidate or group and they either do not get a recount or get cash thean needed... what happens to your money?
In the case of spec. candidates, I undestand if they get more than the $ they need, they can actually keep the money in their campaign fund. Much like our JK donations. In the case of direct contributions to BBV, I think that they can spend the money as they seem fit, which is not a bad thing but it may not go directly to recount efforts. Alliance for Dem. and Help America Count, which is "blessed" by BBV seem like super good places. I welcome any insights on this...
