Congressman McHenry's Campaign Aide Indicted
Posted by Michael Rey

By Laura Strickler and Michael Rey
The CBS News Investigative Unit has learned a man who was a field coordinator in Congressman Patrick McHenry's (R-NC) 2004 campaign has been indicted for voter fraud in North Carolina.

The indictment charges that Michael Aaron Lay, 26, illegally cast his ballot in two 2004 Congressional primary run-offs in which McHenry was a candidate. The charges indicate that Lay voted in a district where it was not legal for him to vote.

At the time Lay was listed as a resident in a home owned by 32-year-old McHenry but campaign records indicate Lay's paychecks were sent to an address in Tennessee. McHenry won the primary by only 86 votes. According to Gaston County, North Carolina District Attorney Locke Bell, Lay was indicted on Monday, May 7 by a local grand jury.

CBS News has learned that these charges were first investigated by the North Carolina State Board of Elections up to two years ago. The results were forwarded to the previous Gaston County District Attorney Mike Lands. In January, Bell was elected the new district attorney for the county and pursued the indictment.

1. Is McHenry that little dipshit who's routinely making an ass of himself?
Well, he's a rethug, so he's therefore always making an ass of himself.

But the guy I'm thinking of is a real punk.

10. He's among the worst of the worst
A smug little twerp who does nothing but repeat talking points, regardless of the question or topic.

I remember when the Foley scandal broke last fall he said the only question was what did Democrats know and when did they know it.

3. Election Fraud in NC
The 2004 election in N.C. was loaded with fraud! Over 4,000 votes were lost in my county and there was problems all over the state. Kerry led in the exit polls, but Bush carried the state?

11. the Christian Conservatives are upset with Pattie McHenry
What happened is that the guys working for the McHenry campaign registered to
vote in the town they were working in. Often campaign workers are told to do this.

Blog Active, the website famous for outing closeted anti gay rights politicians has lots on the
Patrick McHenry voter fraud:

Not just one voter in question at Rep. Patrick McHenry's house!

CBS News reported today that Michael Aaron Lay, an aide to (the unmarried) Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), was arrested on voter fraud charges.

There is more to the story than you're reading in the CBS news item. LOTS MORE....

The funny thing about McHenry is this: I've received tons of tips from across the state, including one from an elected official who told me, "I can tell you Patrick McHenry is gay. I've known him long enough to know."

Now, I'm not saying he is gay, but he does seem to like engaging with Barney Frank. If you have not seen the video of their exchange, it's priceless....

If you go to Blog actives link, you can see the actual voter registration forms and more.

Here is what North Carolina requires of citizens registering to vote:

Anyone filling out a voter registration form in NC must state that they:

"have been a resident of North Carolina, this county, precinct, or other
election district for 30 days before the next election in which I intend to vote."

And provide on that form:

Address where you now live (Number and Street/Road/Dorm)

Address where you get your mail, if different from above (include ZIP code).

6 campaign workers used McHenry's address to register to vote -

"The NCC has done its own investigation and discovered that during the 2004 election
there were 6 people registered to vote using the address of the candidate, Patrick McHenry. The house listed as McHenry’s residence at 1100 Requa Road, Cherryville, was a three bedroom ranch style house. The NCC investigation revealed that several of the occupants of the house at 1100 Requa Road registered shortly before the August, 2004 primary. In particular, one occupant, Michael Aaron Lay, registered to vote in Gaston County while at the same time he was licensed to drive in Tennessee, operated a vehicle tagged in the State of Tennessee and attended the University of Tennessee as an in State student.

Christian Conservatives -

Rumors about Congressman Patrick McHenry and his private life have been swirling around for a few years, but have become so public as to embarrass the Christian Conservatives. They fear that McHenry may become a huge embarrassment, like Foley. Anyone close to McHenry will get singed.

NC Christian Coalition Chairman, Donnie Young, files complaint against Patrick McHenry campaign
Dear North Caroina Conservative,

The following letter will be forwarded to the District Attorney of Gaston County and the NC SBOE. If you see fit to print this letter in your publication please do so in its entirety.

I filed a "complaint" with the NCBOE and Gaston County District Attorney in July 2004 because in my opinion the DA and the BOE needed to investigate the registration of voters in Gaston County.

McHenry's life in a fishbowl:

McHenry let Republicans down by Dennis A. Benfield

It’s clear now that Republicans have much work to do to earn back voter confidence in the Catawba Valley. What’s also clear is that it’s time for ambitious 10th-District congressman Patrick McHenry to move on....

Yes, he often votes “the right way” and does serve individual constituents. But he also lives a questionable lifestyle—in terms of 10th-District conservatism—with character and ethical issues. According to many witnesses, he’s inclined to big shindigs with free-flowing alcohol. More Republicans now see this side of him, but they held their noses and voted to keep the district from Democrat hands....

GOP anger at McHenry for defending Mark Foley:

"It is apparent to many that McHenry is his own worst enemy. In his short, reckless path to self-advancement, McHenry has inflicted a good deal of political damage on others.
Most recently, his defense of Mark Foley on national television for harassing a congressional page was credited with helping to turn the tide of public opinion against the Republican Party. And when it came time to stump for local Republicans last fall, he was conspicuously absent.

12. OH! this is going to blow up around McHenry before long...
Take a look at this link, (I was doing some research)

Some legal communication, letter to CBS about the entire investigation
which started in 2004.
The previous DA was a supporter of McHenry.
