Dave Haynie has an idea for insuring Secure Voting.
Who's Dave Haynie? Just one of the biggest and most legendary uber-geeks ever:

He also brews some fine beer. Throws a hell of a party every year, too, out at his frogpond.

Here's what he says:

"Here's my simple solution (I have a more complicated one in mind, too):
The only legal voting machine will produce a record, on a human and
machine readable card of some kind (punch card, magnetic, smartcard, I
don't care... and it doesn't matter). After you vote, you get this card.

But that's not the end... you review the recording of the vote. If
there's anything wrong, that same card can be fed back into the machine,
erasing your vote and allowing you to revote. Your revote, of course, is
only accepted after invalidation of the original.

But that's not the end... on the other side of the room are machines
provided by the biggest competitor to the company that provided the
original machines (or an independent open source auditer, take your pick).
You feed your cards into those machines on the way out, maybe something
like boarding a plane. Any major disagreement between the original and
the audited vote count, and the original provider (or the competitor, if
it's proven they intentionally skewed the vote) is permanently barred
from producing voting machines. Period, end of discussion, no way to
regain face. You're done."

Comments?

I think it's time for the True Geeks to get involved in this matter.
