19. There are some blood-thirsty assholes here.
A few years ago, the state legislature allowed people to shoot mourning doves, because of overpopulation, and the nuisance factor. I think some people just get a kick out of killing for pleasure.

(don't get me wrong - I don't have any hunting hangups - that's a way of life here.)

The feral cat "problem" here is nothing compared to what I experienced while living in NC. Seriously, there are not stray cats popping out from every corner. If there were, I would be adopting them, or taking them to the shelter.

225. Yes, CW, you are definitely one of us! I see that clearly now!
I always thought the snaps going sounded like a monotone breakfast cereal - pop-pop-pop, as I've pointed out before. Besides, those flying snaps have unpredictable trajectories - just ask bleever!

BTW, did you see the open-ended KOEB/ASTB Gull Bay novel in the clubhouse? YOU could write Chapter 5 if you dared! Just think, a whole new career path - I'm sure it would impress your friends.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=315x2305

Botany wrote the first chapter to cheer us up on a low night with a busload of marooned Norwegian XC skiers, bleever stepped in to deny us same, I wrote what I thought would be a resolution of it all in Chapter 3, and then crispini opened it up in Chapter 4. No one has dared to take it from there.

Yet.

are definitely doing it.

And, if I get it, the argument goes like this: "Sure, he supported an illegal war that resulted in the deaths of more than 10,000 innocent people, and he's a toady for a creeping fascist coup to destroy democracy, but hey, when his tit was in a wringer and questioned whether or not he could support a criminal as a leader of his party, he refused to foam at the mouth against the liberal media and said that Bugman should explain it to the people and let them decide, so give the guy some credit!"

Heh heh.

Did you see the new feel-good humor thread in the clubhouse?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=315x2344
Title: "MORE LAUGHS, PLEASE: Collect funniest DU threads or other sites here"

I'm hoping it won't be sarcastic or disparaging humor, but things that are silly in a refreshing way.

Bet you had a great time with your parents and brothers Fri and over the weekend!

I haven't seen one yet. Soon.

I saw the thread, it's nice to have feel-good places.

It was a great weekend. I love it when the folks get back and we all get together. My stomach hurt from laughing so much.

Friday I went on a company bus trip to Foxwoods. It's my way of giving back to the Native Americans.:)

218. Hurting from laughing so hard with family - what could be better?
I would like to hear more about Foxwoods, with which I'm unfamiliar - got any web sites you'd recommend? (If not, I'll google.) If you have time to do it, I'd like to know what sorts of things are done there "to give back to the Native Americans." (I'm a small -- but cherished - part native American myself, by the way, on my father's side.)

I took some photos to memorialize the first robin of spring (for me anyway) and some other season-turning sights. I can resize and get them hosted and post links here later this evening if you like. You can't see much of the robin, except you can tell what it is by the way it has that high-headed standing posture, there on the new grass. I think it was a female.

Let me know if you want a few links, including a distant shot of that highly symbolic robin.

I was joking. Foxwoods is the casino in CT. On tribal land, so they get a portion of the profits. Each time I go down, the tribe makes more money.:-) I thought you might have heard the commercials they run, I hear them all the time here.

If you do get the robin's pic up, please post in the clubhouse. The thread is hard to navigate the next day.:) I'll try to get my bear picture up tomorrow. (the one that ate five feeders last year)

226. Too funny! I watch virtually no TV so am unfamiliar with the commercials
but I can see how my question must have startled you! I've never heard of the place, though of course I know about the casinos in general. Closest I've been to that is pachinko parlors in Kyoto many years ago, which were guaranteed to lose money (if you played like me) but were really fun. I stayed with the cheapest machines and had a good time.

I'll put the pics in the spring photos thread. They'll be in clickable TinyURL links, so I can make them fairly big without slowing down the thread. I'll look forward to the bear.

Which adds some credence to the idea that the neocon Powers That Be have decided DeLay's usefullness is counterbalanced by his hubris and, perhaps, insanity. Nice BuzzFlash editorial on this here:

195. Get them collars w/ rhinestones, and tell them it's JEWELRY.
. . . There needs to be some haggling and compromising to break this impasse.

I love cats -- AND I love songbirds. Predation by domesticated cats has a greater impact on the songbird population than loss of habitat. What's the answer?

There wouldn't be as great a problem if folks who let their cats roam would get them spayed or neutered, because that would slow down the explosion of unwanted animals who, cruelly, must fend for themselves in all kinds of weather, and give birth under appalling conditions.

We're all grownups. We can find a solution if the determination is there! (The animals are counting on us!)

I think I was being brainwashed by the networks to feel sad!

Now one-by-one we're bouncing back. Look how Keith rebounded tonight! I'm trying to think of a word for it; the closest I can come to describing how he was behaving is "reckless abandon." Very nearly throwing caution to the wind!

It was almost like jazz improvisation . . . I was in absolute heaven following his stream of consciousness!

214. Exactly, WG. Much to be considered and some wisdom is called for
Maybe once they figure out how to be wise over songbirds and kitties, they can start applying it to people too.

But shooting! So many problems with that approach, from so many angles. Got to be another way to accomplish the real goals.

235. Yes, they want an excuse to use those guns they cherish
And cats are safer and easier to shoot than bears.

Imagine all the possibilities for fatal mistakes, both pets and people. Loaded guns ready to go get those cats - shooting into bushes without a clear view of what is there - and just getting into the habit of cooly shooting living things for no particular reason, for fun.

And of course, this means that guns and bullets should be readily available.

And then there is the suffering of a cat that is shot but drags itself away. You think these unspeakable jerks would bother to be sure the poor animal was dead before walking off for anothr beer?

And of course, if there aren't enough cats for good shooting, why then, birds or anything else that moves is fair game.

This is simply unbelievable, that it would even be considerred.

241. I bet most of these turkeys graduated to birds after tin cans, Hope. Add-
. . . booze, and you have an epidemic worse than drive-by shootings just waiting to happen.

I just don't think the idea will fly, legislatively -- but it might embolden some people to do it anyway, thinking they won't be as severely dealt with in the current "war on cats" atmosphere.

244. Yes, that sounds about right.
A lot of hawks are killed for entertainment - they're big and they like to hover on thermals. And maybe the heartless, gutless little jerks have some atavistic sense that the dignity and beauty of the bird will pass to their killer.

It's encouraging so many of the worst things. It is foolish beyond belief. Were they trying to curry favor with gun owners, I wonder, or what is just out-and-out stupidity?

"We have to control the population" is their mantra - but for some, it is a bloodthirsty desire to kill.

It's those kind of people whom I wish their parents believed "we have to control the population." :grr:

The DNR agent said she wasn't advocating the shooting of cats - she just wanted to get the discussion on the table. (these are the loony liberals in Madison. They make me feel conservative! )

No f**king way. Girl, it's people like you that hold this shit in check. We need every last person like you to fight the good fight. You're not alone in it, in fact if you look around, you'll find you're in pretty damn good company. There's a lot of people out there like the ladies of the KOEB, we might not hear about them in the news or see them on tv everyday, but they're there.

The Good Lord has placed you in a position to do good, and encourage others to do so. It may seem like a burden , but it's an honor. You have so many that respect and admire you.

Started to rant, sorry. I just was upset by your tone. You're one of the good ones Rev. We need more.

No, I ain't suicidal or anything like that. I'm sick to f-ing death of evil bashing good, and seemingly getting away with it. People keep doing outrageous things for their sick amusement, and the rest of the world sits back, as if there's nothing wrong with that.

When I say I'm resigning from the human race, that just means I'm embracing my faith, not leaving it behind. It's like saying "if you think this is normal, go join the 'Crucify Him' crowd." I don't know if it's out of ignorance, stupidity, or cowardice. But if this damned human race doesn't speak out soon, I'll be joining the crowd, waiting for the rapture (which I don't believe in!).

253. Oh, that's wonderful
And you know what? She was right in another way she may not realize. When you do those things, you are opening your heart - and that goes for things going in and thngs going out. "Heaven opened up and the angels were singing" sounds about right as a description for what happens then. And you know what, you fed her in addtion to feeding yourself. Talk about win/win!

If you've ever looked into the descriptions of the 7-chakra system, it has a lot to say about this. It's a lovely to ponder. Each of the chakras "rules" a part of life in this view, though all of them interact. The heart chakra (love, emotions) and the throat chakra (expression, sound) are right next to each other (numbers 4 and 5 going up). I'm reading a book about it now and it is utterly fascinating as a way to visualize things that are otherwise hard to integrate.

I hope you find more time like this. In fact, if I believed in messages from "the universe," I'd say you got one when she told you what she did.

In fact, I think she looks damn good for a woman of her age.

131. Update on my mom:
She finally was released by the hospital today. She is now at the skilled nursing unit at their apartment complex. After countless tests, they still have no firm answer as to what's going on with her health. The best the doctor could say was "you're dying of old age."

Jesus. She's only 76.

152. She's about ready to quit her injections.
They were supposed to stop her lung deterioration (which it has), but it is causing tremendous pain in her bones. If she stops them, the scarring will worsen, and she'll die. She's prepared for that, and I'm trying to get there, myself.

170. We've been living with this for several years.
It's only in the last year that she has deteriorated so quickly. She has a pulminary doctor (who is wonderful, and an "adopted" member of our family). He is completely mystified - and it's not as if he hasn't been trying. He's connected with one of the finest hospitals in Madison, and has consulted with others.

It's called "ideopathic" because the cause is of unknown origin. The scarring is also unknown. And there is no cure... only management.

What's hard is that mentally, she is as vibrant a person as I am. Her body just won't keep up with her.

255. Acupuncture can be very helpful with pain and inflammation
And it is also quite pleasant in my experience. (My acupuncturist uses the Japanese style with me and most of her patients, though she is also trained in the Chinese style, which involves deeper needle penetration.) And there are no nasty side effects with acupuncture.

It's a proven fact that pain and inflammation can be helped with acupuncture. I'd recommend checking this out locally - and if you are interested but unsure how to find a good practitioner, I can ask at the place I go if they can make any recommendations for the area based on their connections to the acupuncture "network." (I get my treatments at the Japanese Acupuncture Center, and the New England School of Acupuncture is right next door. They tend to know each other.)

248. There is no such thing as "dying of old age."
That doctor has no business treating elderly patients. He/she should be OUTTA there so fast their pig-head swims. If they believe she's "dying of old age," they are not going to be open to considering the full variety of possible causes for her symptoms. And Sparky's right (as usual) - 76 is NOT OLD.

My first question when I hear about dizziness is: what medications are they taking, and could there be a side effect or a reaction with another of their prescriptions? My second question is often: are you sure that their sleep is normal? No apnea, for example? A lot of doctors don't even ask about that, and it's very common.

But that doctor just can't be trusted, saying something as cruel and stupid and utterly unethical as that.
:grr:

good taste in all things - with the possible exception of some suits and ties, where he can benefit from our help.

I LOVE Dr. Who, of which the very best was Tom Baker. How wonderful that Keef likes Dr Who too! Of course, watching the neocons has to remind a Dr. Who fan of the Daleks and some of the other picturesque villains. "Ex-ter-mi-naaaaate!" Yup, necons all right. Fits Tommy DeLay too, for special reasons. Gotta show you this image, but it is BIG so you can read the story.

through a few. I was/am a much meaner person. Told my hubby before hand that death was the only way out and not to ever think of making me miserable because I would make death look good. Course he was the one wanted to get married. I grew up surrounded by divorced people so didn't think much of the paper. Between stubbornness and plain ol meanness it has actually turned out pretty well. The other major rule was not to anything he minded me doing cause I could do it better, faster and more often and would.
