About the Open Voting Consortum
I'm posting this on behalf of Lara of OVc.
The OVC shares DUers' goals. Check it out and see what you think of their solution to the e-voting problems.

http://www.OpenVoting.org

The Open Voting Consortium is a non-profit dedicated
to the development, maintenance, and delivery of open
voting systems for use in public elections. The open
voting system involves computers that print a paper
ballot summary after each person votes. The paper
ballot summaries are then used to count the votes.
This system combines the advantages of computer voting
(blind people can vote without assistance, it's easy
to tell what choice the voter intended to make) with
the security of hand-countable, voter-verified paper
ballots. Plus, all machines use open source software
(anyone can see how the machines are programmed) and
recycled computers can be used instead of expensive
new touch-screens. For more information, check out
www.OpenVoting.org.

1. It sounds pretty good and it may be the best we can do in some...
...states. It would have to be combined with the voter verified paper ballot taking precedence over the electronic tally in any recount, AND with open source code for ALL voting machinery including central vote tabulators.

I would say also that no election system is complete without honest, undoctored exit polls, used world wide to verify election. (OUR exit polls on 11/2 were "altered" to fit BushCon electronic "official results"--thus Americans were denied the knowledge that Kerry won the exit polls. In the Ukraine, they had the two different numbers and knew something was very wrong.)

The best we can do: We've gone so far down the election fraud road that I think we need to back way up, and return to paper ballots and hand counts--which occur at human speed and which the human eye can see.

2. Let the electronic tally serve as a preliminary number.
If you only get a hand-count for a recount you can imagine how hard it'll be to get a recount.

Actually, why imagine. Just look at 2000 and 2004.

I think hand counts at the precinct level is quite doable.
