Why Kerry would be a great president
This little snippet in a behind-the-scenes report from Newsweek makes me feel very good about the vote I cast on Tuesday:

Clinton Advice Spurned. Looking for a way to pick up swing voters in the Red States, former President Bill Clinton, in a phone call with Kerry, urged the Senator to back local bans on gay marriage. Kerry respectfully listened, then told his aides, "I'm not going to ever do that."

Boy, what a rudderless flip-flopper with no backbone, huh?

1. But Clinton is pretty smart, don't you think?
I mean, not many of us realized how important the issue of gay marriage is going to be.

4. smart? perhaps. Principled? not so much
Kerry shows us something here about his character...that he would never bow to bigots now matter how politically expedient.

And you know what? He would be president-elect right now if Rove didn't dive the GOP deeper into bed with bigots. There's no way I don't see this biting them in the ass in a big way, and sooner rather than later.

5. Well, it doesn't look like principles win one an election, does it?

6. irony
it's funny you say that, because it illustrates to a tee why we don't understand our red state opponents.

We made the election about Bush's absolute incompetence and recklessness.

They made it about Bush's principles.

I guess it does look like principles wins one an election...at least with that crowd.

2. Live and learn
ahum. the dems ran away from this issue like scared little girls and they still lost, at least Dean hit it head on and provided an alternative (civil unions) that would not involve the churches.

3. Um... that was what Kerry said
Sorry. I like Dean, but claiming he was better than Kerry on this point is wrong. Kerry's position on this issue was exactly the same as Dean's. EXACTLY the same.

Kerry also pledged to extent federal marriage benefits to any gay couples in states the legally recognized them, and to do away with DOMA and "don't ask don't tell."
