Blackwell To Speak On "Ethics in Leadership"!!!
Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 11:45 PM by KerryOn
Kenneth Blackwell will be the guest speaker at the Upper Arlington, Ohio Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting. He will be speaking on "Ethics In Leadership". (E-gads!)

The event is open to the public. Cost is $30 for non-members and $25 for members. The meeting will be Wednesday January 12th from 11:00-1:00 pm at the Scioto Country Club located at 2196 Riverside Drive. (Just North of Trabue Road) Call (614) 481-5710 for reservations.

Some how I don't think he is qualified to make this speech. Maybe a few of us should show up and help him out a little.

44. From the Desk of J. K. Blackwell, Declaration of Character and Ethics
From the Desk of J. Kenneth Blackwell, Ohio Secretary of State: The UncommonSense Declaration of Character and Ethics.

Snip:
Throughout my years in public service, I’ve seen first-hand many of the positive and varied ingredients that combine to give our country its strength and viability.

One of those ingredients -character- stands out above the rest. Character is the cornerstone of American citizenship. A good citizenship is the foundation of community. It is also the foundation of both good business and government.

Yet today’s generation of leaders often lack two fundamental resources. We lack a shared vocabulary of character-building ethics, {no shit!} and we suffer from the absence of support for our role as on-the-job character builders.

No one is perfect, although we’ve all known a few people who dare to claim infallibility. For the rest of us, there is “UncommonSense.” “Uncommon,” because sadly, defined ethics are not common anymore and “Sense,” because it prevails upon the conscience.

Snip:
Noble visions, worthy missions and guiding values all require and are validated by character ethics. Thus, a strong character foundation is and always will be the key predictor of the true personal health, interpersonal vitality, and organizational success.

With this in mind, please consider making your own commitment to character building. By learning and living character ethics-the virtues advocated in UncommonSense – Ohio’s leaders can launch a revolution of character building in our great state. Join me.

{I think I’m going to throw up.}

House Considers Weakening Ethics Rules
January 01, 2005
WASHINGTON (AP)- Republican leaders are considering a change in House ethics rules that could make it harder to discipline lawmakers.

Excerpt)

The proposal being circulated among House Republicans would end a general rule against any behavior that might bring "discredit" on the chamber, according to House Republican and Democratic leadership aides. House members would be held to a narrower standard of behavior in keeping with the law, the House's rules and its ethics guidelines.
Other proposed changes to the ethics committee's rules being circulated in a "Dear Colleague" letter from House Rules Chairman David Dreier, R-Calif., would let House members respond to any admonishment before a letter goes out from the committee, and would end an investigation if there is a tie vote.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., plans to bring the proposal before a meeting of all House Republicans next week "and see what they think," said Hastert spokesman John Feehery. The broader ethics rule in question was used this year to admonish Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, though the committee said he did not break House rules. Democrats and government watchdog groups denounced the proposed change.

"It would lower the standard of official conduct, and if that's the case, it would be the first time that it has been done since 1968, and it would be done on a completely partisan basis," said Jennifer Crider, spokeswoman for House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, on Friday. Pelosi, D-Calif., also plans to huddle with Democrats next week to discuss a strategy for defeating the proposal.

"Members of the House should be kept to the highest ethical standard, not the lowest," Crider said. "Now, the code is higher than the law. This would say you've only violated the code of ethics if you've violated the law." Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21, a watchdog group, said the House Republican leaders' proposal "would fundamentally undermine and damage the House ethics rules, and would constitute the biggest backtracking we have ever seen on ethics standards in the House."

who will add his own tips for ethical behavior (both in and out of the bedroom)?

I hope you tell Ohio DU members and other likeminded Ohioans. It would be so great if some really went, and, as Kitkat said above, when he takes questions, they should begin asking Conyers' questions! If anyone does this, they should have people with videocams standing unobtrusively in the background, waiting to video any arrests or other strongarming that people might experience simply for exercising their right to free speech.

23. At least it will be a very short speech
...he knows nothing about ethics or leadership from the reports of his actions in Ohio. First off, any person with zero integrity wouldn't be in charge of the elections and co-chairing a campaign for a candidate. Secondly, that person wouldn't violate the Voting Rights Act by suppressing votes in every way possible (following the example of Glenda Hood in Florida). Third, that perions wouldn't be a traitor to his or her race. African-Americans gave their lives to gain the right to vote.

42. From the FreePress
Despite ducking depositions, Blackwell is escalating his public appearances in hopes of becoming Ohio’s next governor. On January 12, 2005, Blackwell is scheduled to speak at the exclusive Scioto Country Club on the topic of “Ethics in Leadership.” Blackwell became nationally known after disenfranchising voters who had not registered on 80-pound bond paper stock under an archaic Ohio law. He reversed longstanding Ohio tradition that allowed voters to cast provisional votes by county by ruling that none of these votes would be counted unless the voter was in the right precinct. He also was recently censured for running a “get out the vote” campaign for Issue One, a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and spousal benefits.
