A Different World Here In California

Went to the polls just now (10:30 AM) in Vista, CA which is in north San Diego county and had the wrong address but quickly remedied.

Anyway they had moved the polls to the elementary school and after reading the DU threads today I thought crap, there will be huge lines, but I'm not going anywhere.

Absolutely beautiful day here and no poll watchers or violence or thugs or rumors of thugs and when we arrived there were maybe 5 or 6 people inside and we flew through the process in about 5 minutes.

Just wanted to post to let others know how different things are around the country, to thank ALL of the posters on DU and send my regards and thanks to those who are voting even though the lines are long and it might be raining. GO DU but most of all GO USA.

I also voted straight Democratic ticket which is something I would NEVER do if bush wasn't our current misleader.

2. Voted in Murrieta, Ca. (Riverside Co - just north of San Diego Co)

Everything went smoothly ... and people were very professional. Line was out the door ... and usually, it is not that crowded. I hated voting on the touchscreens, but the people seemed intent on doing their jobs.

One lady was not on the list, and she was immediately given a provisional ballot. No problems.

10. Same thing about 20 miles up, out in Perris

Most of time I show up there are 8 or ten people, this time 35 or 40, but still went fast. lots of people for 10:00 am, but more than manageable so far.

3. A big THANK YOU to all who've waited in long lines

The situation here in my part of Massachusetts was similar to what YellowArmBand described. No waiting whatsoever, all calm both inside and outside the polling place. (Though my stomach did flutter a bit at the sight and sound of kids chanting "Four more years" on a nearby streetcorner, as their parents stood there with * signs.

Oh well. The fact is, in live in a sort of utopia, as far as the presidential election goes. JK is my senator, and has been for years. The response I get when wearing Kerry pins is invariably positive and hopeful. And my state is a sure thing for the blue column.

Yet I'm still a wreck, and have been for weeks and weeks now. I've done a little bit to swing help New Hampshire to our side, but I can only try to IMAGINE what it's been like for all of you living and working in battlegreound states 24/7. You have my respect and my gratitude, and I hope you know deep in your hearts that, when JK is giving his acceptance speech, this victory belongs to YOU!

4. I just had a similar experience here in Modesto

I voted about 11:00. About five or six voters inside, some people going as I came in, some arriving as I left. Several young guys and young couples.

They gave me a cookie when I voted. Good cookie.

A moderate turnout is probably a good thing in this very red part of our blue state.

I know I must resist the temptation to judge by superficial appearances, but I want to believe most of the young people were young Kerry supporters. Seemed a younger "crowd" (to use the term loosely) than I've seen in the past, and dressed more like slackers than shit-kickers.

5. Got a call an hour ago from a friend here in Texas

"I did it in 5 minutes," he announced. He was energized, ready to go round up his 2 roommates and walk them through the same deal.

Whilst I, the nebbishy activist of the lot, had to go stand in a line for 3 hours on Friday night to vote "early." :)

As long as they all get counted, it's all good to me!

7. My wife voted at lunch in Austin, had no wait.

I voted the same place this morning, and waited an hour, and was told that the lines earlier were two hours. So a lot depends on time of day. Democrats have jobs, so we tend to go early or late.

im concerned about voting straight democratic ticket. dont worry ill vote for all dems but i feel that if i dont put my mark next to Kerry then theyll not count it. if this thing gets close i would put it past them, call me paranoid but as ive said before I DO NOT TRUST REPUBLICANS.
