Govt ponders new Indon security deal
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says the Government is considering whether it will try to negotiate a new defence and security treaty with Indonesia.

Indonesia's president-elect, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, has previously said a bilateral security agreement negotiated by former prime minister Paul Keating in the mid-1990s should be revived.

Mr Downer says that if negotiations are eventually held on a security treaty, Australia would push for a broader agreement with Indonesia.
