Government black boxes will 'collect every email'
Source: Independent UK

Internet "black boxes" will be used to collect every email and web visit in the UK under the Government's plans for a giant "big brother" database, The Independent has learnt.

Home Office officials have told senior figures from the internet and telecommunications industries that the "black box" technology could automatically retain and store raw data from the web before transferring it to a giant central database controlled by the Government...

The UK is already the most closely monitored population in the world.

Remember: Eric Blair (George Orwell) was English, he saw this coming.

2. This is unacceptable
I wonder what backlash is going on in the UK to this extremely invasive plan.

3. Not if they're encrypted!
These boxes cannot decrypt encrypted text, and thus, if someone uses a program like PGP, or any other such program, they are safe. What is more, is that there are anonymizers on the net, if you are concerned that much.
This is nothing new. The tech to do this has been around for a long time.

Yes, and I suspect it's already in use here in the US.

7. "This is nothing new." !??!!
The data are simply passed from the BBs to the servers, from the servers they can be cracked - PGP makes explicit that it cannot withstand a serious decrypt attempt, hence the name.

Anonymizers: maybe yes, maybe no. Some keep logs, some (say they) do not.

BUT: "This is nothing new." !??!!

We are not really talking about the technology here, what we are talking about, what is upsetting people in the UK is that the GOVERNMENT of their country is planning on INTERCEPTING and SAVING EVERY SINGLE internet transmission ... that is what is new.

That is what is frightening: The Will, not the tech.

8. outrageous
didnt they just announce a few weeks ago that people would also be required to give their name/address/id to purchase cellphones- so they can be tracked as well? it seems like every other month theyre implementing some obscene assault on peoples freedoms and privacy. its disheartening and i hope people will stand up, spread awareness, and stop this. its already gone too far. =/
